If the story is about someone achieving a rare but desirable outcome, and there's a common perception that the outcome isn't rare, then it makes sense to post a comment like the GP's. It may help prevent availability-biased readers from imp

What's (allegedly) hard to grasp is that Tumblr is Tumblr, not a generic money-engine that eats X dollars worth of fuel and puts out $Y worth of value. Mayer is acknowledging that part of Tumblr's recipe for spitting out that $Y is the cult

The article's real title is "SignForms – Going paperless just got easy." It's about an app they built in Node, mostly covering their choice of modules. The title here on Hacker News does not reflect that.

Hundreds of millions is two orders of magnitude more money than "the first few millions." To me that seems pretty significant. And even more so when you factor in how many more things (or even classes of things) you can buy with $10E8 vs. $

Is thinking about getting gas a couple times a month actually worse than remembering to charge a Tesla every single night? What if you forget to plug it in? I'm skeptical that any of their customers are so inhumanly busy that the split-seco

Covering how $a or $b does stuff on a PowerPoint slide isn't the same thing as having students write a $thing. Which sort of sucks when they go on the job and have to write a $thing! That statement is true for many different p

If people who already work in software feel the need to study for an interview, it's a pretty decent indication that the interview itself is... not ideal.

Where's it gonna go? Even if jquery.com and all the CDN-hosted copies just fell off the face of the earth, you'd probably still have a dusty fork somewhere. Worse case: you go digging through your browser cache. It's certainly good to know

I've found the web becomes much better when you make Flash click-to-play. YouTube especially, since the videos don't start until you ask.

The key to being a good developer is to be able to find your answer as quickly as possible without learning anything else. That might be the key to short-term productivity, but I think "good" is more complicated. I'd rather take a s
