From my experience so far, you can keep plodding along as a regular developer as you get older. Your salary will plateau eventually. The plateau is high relative to most other jobs.

I use skype on my cheap(ish) android phone to call my mom in France from the US and it's usually crystal clear and with no latency. Not sure what I am doing right here but I have no complaints. And so much cheaper than in the old days

This is the one I ended up getting when my previous microwave broke. It has one dial to set the time and no spinny plate. Pull to open. Happy with it so far but we'll see how long it lasts... https://smile.amazon.com/gp

Nice song. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on this and in case anyone else is interested, here is the NTSB report on the airplane fire "of undetermined origin" that killed Stan Rogers at the age of 33: https://web.ar

I developed a fear of flying as I grew older but I have been able to mostly get over it. What helped most was realizing that me being afraid of flying has no effect on whether the plane crashes or not. So, it's pointless being afraid.

Not so sure it's bullshit. Why live in the real world if you can somehow live in an online 3D world that's better? It's going to happen eventually and everyone will be wearing goggles all day, just like they are on their phon

Thanks for posting the article. I am going through this with my son at the moment and most of the things written here are familiar to me. It's good to get this stuff in the open, it's not as uncommon a situation as people think.

My mom was born in 1939 in France. She told me that she used to get an orange as her Christmas gift (nothing else). She would save her orange for a few days, looking forward to eating it. On the other hand her one brother would eat all of h

There was a good article that I can't find any more about someone who got really good at defender by immediately shooting all of the humanoids, thereby triggering the swarm of mutants. It was a good lesson on how you can get good at so

I can relate to this. She is bravely talking about a condition that is still somewhat taboo (mental health) in order to 1) help others understand her problem and 2) make it less taboo. This potentially helps her and others in a similar po

Step 1: don't pay the bill Step 2: wait... Step 3: continue to not pay the bill step 4: when you've waited a very long time, offer a tiny amount of money

I had the same idea, I think this is the ultimate solution. Would need to be easy to add links and allow moderators to approve submitted websites and provide a good search capability. Would only include quirky websites.

I agree that job descriptions should show a salary range. Otherwise you don't know if you should even apply. I also think that we all need to learn to estimate our market value and negotiate our salary, no matter what gender or race.

Inflation measurements should be tied to location because housing costs vary dramatically and are a huge proportion of expenditure for most people.

Despite all the focus on Tesla, companies that makes a minimal, good and inexpensive electric car/truck will win big as far as I'm concerned. Bonus points for an iconic look.

Apparently some people don't have enough naturally-produced suffering? They feel the need to manufacture it by (over)doing something that should be enjoyable.

Greetings fellow Lord of Sealand. I recently received my certificate also. It's a nice touch that the certificate is mailed using a postage stamp created by Sealand itself!

This is brilliant. Reminds me of the stressful time I had in Paris trying to drive with all of the crazy motorcyclists darting around all over the place. Also, good job on providing KEXP radio in Seattle.

It's a good list. Another contributor to mental health is "doing things that you enjoy". That can trade off against some of the other items. So, eating a delicious (but unhealthy) meal gives you points in the happiness column
