If sitting for long periods is bad what about lying in bed for long periods (e.g. sleeping)? It's difficult to reconcile the findings that sleeping is great for the body and mind (essential actually) but sitting is terrible.

I find that playing some white noise on headphones can really help. On youtube there are many videos such as 10 hours of rain on a pond. I've been bothered by my coworkers typing, I find that the patter of rain and clatter of keyboard

Unfortunately scientists are often rewarded/celebrated for research that finds groundbreaking or new results as opposed to results which are actually true but less interesting. This incentive is very difficult to resist.
