This is one of the biggest concerns I have as an aging developer. When I was younger, I could focus on the craft of software engineering, but as I age, I feel like I have to branch out my skill set as sort of a safety net to ensure that I&#

Japan is homogenous. (Generally speaking) Americans are isolated against not only the world but also each other as a result of sparely populated areas, car culture + tech (no interaction with others), and media feeding the average American

This is largely an American problem. When I lived in Europe I didn't see people being "fearful" about letting their children roam the streets. During my recent trips to Japan, I also felt that same vibe. Children under the ag

I just traveled to Japan, the Phil, Bulgaria, San Francisco, and Boston without having to change sim cards or worry about my data situation. I'm going to keep it until someone else can do the same at a lower price.

Is the only difference between Heroku and Serverless is that I pay for Heroku while the app is idle and that I have great debugging tools on heroku? Please help me understand why I would choose Serverless over heroku

Right on. I guess I've done it so many times that I hadn't thought about it. I have a medium sized site, about 12 rps, using rails with a bunch of backend operations (it's a social network), so I think I just have rose-tinted

Disclaimer: I work at Reforge. Also: It feels like I should be paying Reforge to work there. The incredible depth of the material has helped me personally: - articulate ideas in a common vocabulary that were difficult to explain prior - ide

I've hired 100+ engineers in my career. The ones with side projects are the best engineers. That said, sure I've had to fire some who don't perform.

Put it in your contract before you get employed. If starting a company while employed, reach out to your employer saying you're building company X which does Y as a side project and you need a document stating no IP ownership.

Yep - agree. I write code to build businesses, not to follow code trends. If the business needs Node.js, you betcha. If the business doesn't, why not use something that has worked for 10+ years?

Eventbrite should be ringing the NYSE bell pretty soon, but even Eventbrite is unable to penetrate the decade long deals Ticketmaster has in place.

I run a 3000+ person community on Discord. It's incredibly easy to get a simple access control list going which makes managing this many people a breeze. For public facing roles, users themselves can enter the Discord server and choose

In the summer of 2012, I rewrote literally every line of the front end to prep for international launches in the sense that every line had me as the git blame author. I'm actually pretty curious how much is left.
