Everyone in this thread seems to be hung up on sharing code from an employer or 'good code'. You could clone an open source repo and use that if you're worried. The value isn't the code; it's the conversation. "

This is as good a time as any to ask about Render. I've been eyeing it recently and I'm thinking about launching my next project with it. Does anyone have any takeaways from using Render vs Heroku?

I've never been put in the situation where an engineer shared something alarming from a proprietary code base, but hypothetically if someone brought with them the code for how to hack superuser privs for an old company, that would be a

I've interviewed maybe 500 engineers in my career. I'm an early engineer of Instacart, 3rd engineer of Eventbrite, founding engineer of Reforge. Started 3 companies myself. My interview is always the same: 1. Bring code you'v

Wow, I make the same revenue as Fast as a one-man entrepreneur. It really amazes me sometimes the strategies of these heavily funded companies. Why pile on so much burn so quickly?

You raise an interesting point. Who's data is it? If you walk into a grocery store, and cameras record which aisle you walk down, which items you stop to look at and which things you buy. Is that legal? What if the cameras block out yo

Thanks! Yes, it was definitely exhausting, but I think life is lived in phases, so I always take periods of rest when I need it. Out of curiosity, what would you have submitted this post as? Tell HN?

Can't argue with that logic. But presenting failures is better than not having any information at all, I'd argue. By showing any work at all, people can give feedback.

Assault w/Deadly Weapon - took 15 years to get it pardoned and expunged. The hardest battle I've fought in my life. It makes startups look easy. I'll write more about it one day, but I don't want to screw it up.

+1 That's a great point to make for people who are building side projects. Make sure you list your side projects in an exception in the IP clauses of your employment contract, like I did.

I already had a different side project with 300k users so it was incredibly easy to find PMF fast because I just emailed them. Tech choices: I never reinvent the wheel. I just take working pieces from other work that I've done and glue

Technically I don't work currently, so I'm not sure if this is a side project. I was the founding engineer and Head of Eng at Reforge the past 4+ years while I was building Closing Credits. I left in August 2021. So, it was a side

I use lazygit a dozen times or more per day. As a tmux+vim user w/lazygit, I don't think I've touched my trackpad in years, and it still feels like a modern interface and faster than all the IDEs out there.
