why do people keep having their content for free for google to use? it doesn't make sense anymore. the google web social contract is broken, there is no tit for tat anymore. only paywall sites get it right now.

as a part-time postdoc out of choice, i also see EU grants being used mainly as a way to prevent unemployment for highly skilled people. If the public knew where this money is going i doubt there would be much support for these grants. Tons

That's needlessly adversarial. Smart people are useful in various positions. Lots of bureaucrats work on LHC, DARPA etc, lots of supersmart people are hired by Faangs (Hinton, Lecun). The distribution of genius is always extremely peak

Wordpress is unlike github pages or medium. In theory a LAMP server could run on everyone's home router, and they 'd publish their blog there. With commercial interest , network configurations would change to accomodate that, and
