Cyclist here. I'm amazed by how much money people spend on their vehicles. I have an expensive bike (about $1000 new), and aside from perhaps $100-$200 on maintenance and equipment per year, I spend nothing else for daily transportatio

On Android, whenever I want to copy something I have to wait a few seconds for the menu to fully load. Otherwise I end up tapping on the wrong icon. Quite irritating.

I was born with bad hearing and tinnitus. When I tell people, some are quick to blame attending loud concerts, but I don't think I've attended more than a couple concerts and none were particularly loud. Plus, I had both problems

I filed a FOI request to the UK Ministry of Defence for a classified report in my field. About a month later they gave me a copy. The only redactions were names of various researchers, including the names of the authors of the report that I

Thanks for the comment and the links. You may be right. My comment was based on what I am familiar with that was previously classified. (All of which has been since declassified, so there's probably sampling bias.) I don't know mu

Thanks for pointing f-strings out. I'm transitioning a script with a lot of string manipulation from Python 2 to 3 and this is better than concatenation, % formatting, or str.format().

I've used Zotero regularly since 2012 or so. At the time I chose it because it integrated with Firefox, though I recall looking into Mendeley as well. If you use BibTeX or BibLaTeX I'd recommend the following extension: https:&#x

I don't think sanitizing or deleting online accounts is that time consuming. I have about 600 accounts listed in my password manager, about 300 of which are categorized as either offline or deleted. Starting late last year I went throu

I live in Austin. Sorry to hear about your friend. Can't say that I'm surprised. Austin seems to be full of people who are happy to give cyclists lip service, but once they have to wait more than 5 seconds for a cyclists, they cou

When I moved to Texas I did not anticipate this. As a cyclist, I will definitely keep the types of vehicles in mind when choosing a place to live from here on. Texans do worse, as "grille guards" are particularly common: http:&#x

At least for bikes, it's fairly well accepted that riding on the sidewalk is less safe than riding on the road: http://bicyclesafe.com/#crosswalk The chance of getting hit from behind likely decreases on the sidewalk,

If you cycle for transportation, you'll readily encounter delivery truck drivers parked in your lane. If you drive you probably aren't paying attention to this problem and underestimate its frequency.

I recognize this and am sympathetic. Ultimately changes need to come from management. But parking in the bike lane is not necessary a large fraction of the time. I always point out a convenient alternative parking spot when talking to drive
