I remember having to get out the specifications for my monitor during the Linux setup process in the late 90s. I don't miss that.

I gave it a try in a VM for a few hours, hoping to find a replacement to Dropbox and Box.net. Without diving into the source, my primary complaint was that the whole thing felt unpolished. There were display errors that just needed some TLC

I'm curious to see where they take this. Amazon, Google, and Apple already will host your music and have stores to sell new music from; Dropbox has neither. What could they possibly do that would be more than just a "me too!"?

In the video, he tested OS X, Windows XP, and Server 2012. OS X beachballed, XP went to 100% CPU, and Server 2012 panicked and rebooted. All three failed; this isn't just an Apple issue. Was Microsoft notified as well?

I went that route. The current Mini is by far the most complicated, scary computer I've worked in, and the SSD is the absolute first thing into the chassis. It's doable, but it's far more complicated than the current (non-retina) MacBook Pr

FYI, I've learned a little trick that 1Password doesn't seem to share widely. Go into your Dropbox, and in the 1Password.agilekeychain folder there is a file named 1Password.html. It's a read-only instance of your 1Password keychain usable

If they're gonna go the Apple route, go the whole way: don't make me ask for permission to install software I've licensed on my computer (via software activation). Charge a reasonable amount ($20? 30?) and charge that same amount to SMB cus

As do I. I use the MiniSub Chrome app when I'm listening on a desktop computer, the included web interface when I'm importing or curating my library, and iSub on my iPhone/iPad. I'm only a week or so into this setup, but I'm loving it so fa

Apparently, Cisco also makes servers these days. No clue how good they are in any department (performance/reliability/costs), but they exist.

For what it's worth, you can beat the TSA for under $30k - a used Cessna 150 can be had for around that price. The cost of a rental car at your destination will take quite a while to add up to the other $270k.

From whom? Dell doesn't, to my knowledge, offer any CD drives. It's DVD or nothing; we usually choose the latter due to iDRAC's virtual CD/DVD capabilities anyway.

I'd argue the exact opposite. Case in point #1: I bought a license for Sublime Text 2 from the developer. I'm free to use it on all of my Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. (Meaning, when I'm forced to use Windows, I actually have a decent te

Every Starbucks and McDonalds in the US that I've been to has offered completely free WiFi. No need for plans. They're both AT&T run; I believe the idea was to get people off the cell networks and onto wireless back when the iPhone came

It can be done. I'm doing it now. It's not cheap, though, as the FiOS router is actually 3+ devices in one: a MoCA adapter for the uplink on channel C, a MoCA adapter providing networking to the cable boxes on one of the D channels, and a r

You're correct, I see how I missed that. However, I'd argue that the use of open source firmware in this case is a means to an end, since proprietary firmware generally sucks. But since this is an article about how to have a quality Interne

No mention of Mikrotik? I picked up a RB750GL last week, and so far, it's everything DD-WRT/Tomato/etc wish they could be. It works as a basic plug-and-play router, but it's incredibly flexible beyond that. Check out http://wiki.mikrotik.c

Add a decent markup (perhaps $100) for the added marketability. After all, unlike other used laptops out there, this one now has a brand new battery that's guaranteed to hold a charge for years to come.

I sort of agree, but with the new screens, one would assume you'll be able to run with a smaller font to make room. I guess we'll have to see how that works out.

The assumption that every possible value from 0 to 99 is equally likely doesn't seem like the best idea. In a country where the cost of items usually ends in .99, .97, or the like, and the sales tax is added after the fact (and usually from
