This reminded me of a story about the launch of WebTV by Microsoft back in the 90s. My memory is blurry but essentially the bug was in the signup or login code. When displaying an error to the user, the memory address to read the message fr

In my experience fuel injection is much more reliable than carburetors. Fuel injection requires zero adjustment. Many mid-90s cars have electronic fuel injection and ABS controllers and that’s it.

When faced with software/malware that was appending links to user's instant messages back in 2005, back-end code to silently drop the user's messages was put in place. This was a messaging service that had ~200 million users.

If you only have one thread per core it is possible there will be no runnable threads while there is still work in the queue. Other threads could be waiting for IO or already running.

If you are not using async IO and have a thread per core, if (as is quite common) your program needs to make IO calls (network being likely worst case) then the thread will sleep on a blocking IO call and CPU will be idle even if there’s

The success of standardization predates LTE by a lot if you look beyond the US which had competing technologies until LTE. GSM networks (2G) allowed roaming and switching between phones by swapping SIMs in all of Europe in the mid nineties,

Sure, SQL Server supports a maximum of 32767 connections each of which use around 128kB. Meaning that if you use the max connections you’ll need 4GB for the connection overhead. We see no noticeable drop in performance with increased idle c

I agree - the disparity between the cost of idle connections in Postgres vs MSSQL is hampering our ability to migrate.

I would think it would be better to have a provisioning design that did not require that the company retain the seed data for every fob they had sold.

True for the drivetrain but a car these days is a lot more than the drivetrain. Those dozens of other ECUs mentioned are using the same diagnostic error codes and protocols as ICE models. Everything from intermittent overheating of electric

I think the benefit of a standardized diagnostic connector (and the protocols that come with it) are well worth a few more grams. Off-the-shelf data logging and diagnostic software is useful.

I’m curious about what their approach is to handle consistency with object creation and deletion in the client service. ie how do clients guarantee that the relevant ACLs are created and destroyed in Zanzibar when clients create and destroy

The price is high compared with ICE but for what you get as an EV it is well priced. Significantly cheaper than model Y [1] now that model Y standard range has been discontinued, especially as VW still gets the $7500 fed subsidy. You are lo

Gradle’s remote build cache which caches at the task level is nice and granular. Also we’ve never had a problem with a change requiring a rebuild not being detected. One thing that Bazel has that I wish gradle did was remote compilation and

I have read a number of comments where folks state that AZ is accused of shipping doses out of EU to other markets (I assume the U.K.). However, I don’t believe any evidence of this has been presented and it is a suspicion of officials in B

Apple has something like ~40% of US market share of smart phones. Therefore it is not a monopoly even if within that market share they have complete control with app store.

One nice thing about RiscOS on Archimedes was that you could write fully-fledged GUI applications using just the BASIC version built into ROM. This made it very accessible vs the need to buy development tools on Windows.
