You have a system running "Package A v1.0", which requires "Package X v2.3" and "Package Y v4.5". You need to install "Package B v2.0", which requires "Package Y v5.0". Note that Y4.5 and Y5.0 are incompatible. RPM/APT have ways of dealing

"[Top executives were] plunged into years of nut-crushing negotiations [...]" Perhaps unnecessary hyperbole, but entertaining nonetheless. If you want "just the facts" without the hyperbole, read the indictment [1]. FWIW, I find the RS arti

It's an interesting methodology. Some thoughts: (1) 12 times is way too low for number of wears. I'm probably extreme, but I've got tech shirts that could apply for a drivers license; I've easily worn some of them hundreds of times -- let's

It seems ironic that a document that wants to avoid a "small group to have oligopolistic control" is hosted on Google. The primary problem with a "completely decentralized internet" seems to be glossed over in the document. They focus on ro

It's been a big week for the Streisand Effect. Between The Oatmeal and Never Seconds, nearly a quarter million dollars has been raised for charities.

Given that (a) the Flask-Security extension's changelog only goes back a couple of months and (b) the extension registry explicitly lists some (but not all) extensions as "approved", I'd guess that it just hasn't gotten listed yet. Since so

To Americans who argue "not in my country": * In the 1930s being Japanese in the USA was perfectly legal. After 1942 it was not. * Prior to 1947, Americans had freedom of association. Starting in 1947, numerous people were denied employment

Sounds like there's no reason for me to switch. I've already messed with configs and everything is stable now, so that's a sunk cost. I already know bourne-style syntax, so learning fish (even if it's easier) is an added cost, not to mentio

They need to update the slogan? "A command line shell for the 90s" doesn't really draw me in. What I want to know: 1. In what specific ways is it better than zsh? 2. Is it absolutely, rock-solid stable?

Most companies I've worked for have had some kind of annual fire drill / alarm testing. They announce it the prior week, and then, say, Tuesday at 10am the alarm goes off, everyone files out of the building into the parking lot for 5 minute

Are the investors getting money out of these deals, or is FB just recruiting away the talent? If the investors are getting screwed, I would expect to see new terms on employment agreements in an effort to protect their capital.

They'll keep at it -- inventing new TLAs as needed -- until all of the individual pieces are passed. I'd bet a shiny nickel that (at least in the US) the worst bits won't be part of any big standalone legislation, they'll be buried in some

Instead of changing the asserts in the test, change the code you're testing. Inject an intentional failure and verify that your test fails.

In other news, a one-way trip to Mars only costs $50k. If you don't make it, you can sue for a refund, but you have to sue in Martian courts, which won't be set up for a few more decades.

It's interesting how so much is focused on airport security. Let's assume that we figured out how to make airline terminals 100% terrorist-safe and completely secure, no exceptions. (Yeah, it's a fantasy, but stay with me...) At that poin

For whiteboard coding, I've always given interviewees their choice of programming language and have said, "Don't worry about syntax." For me it's more about how you approach the problem than whether you can spell correctly.
