Stealing is when you take something from him, and he no longer has the thing you took. Piracy is when you see something for free that everyone else paid money for. You watching doesn't prevent anyone else from watching. Piracy isn

I was in film school in the 00s, when the media companies were in the news for trying to bankrupt the families of high schoolers to make a point that piracy is bad. This was the "you wouldn't download a car" era, when they t

From what I recall reading, it was a matter of market definition. They defined the Android app market to be all devices that run Android, and then said Google monopolized it; whereas the iOS market is just devices made by Apple. I don'

For those who haven't clicked through the article, the "Bell Labs" in question is apparently the maker of literal mousetraps; not the legend in telecom innovation you're thinking of.

Seems like this may be a casualty of HN's "use the original article title" policy. If you read below the update, this post was from July. So whoever posted presumably did to draw attention to them losing the battle, but that

From a product POV, GitHub seems like a solved problem. It's been working well-enough with the current feature set for over a decade, with many companies building themselves on top of its stack. If they stagnate in MS bureaucracy but

I'm shocked this attack works. I thought the last 15 years of browser dev were largely isolating domains from each other to prevent cross-site attacks, and introducing consent flows for little used and/or dangerous platform featur

Incognito shares the session, so if you have Facebook and shady sites open in incognito at the same time, you've reintroduced this attack vector. If you want real isolation, user browser profiles.

As I recall, SVG was Adobe attempting to supplant Flash by publishing an open standard. It didn't work at the time, so they just bought Macromedia.

For years (and way more recently than is appropriate), the financial institution Schwab would silently truncate your password to 8 characters. If your password was 123lookatme, you could type 123lookaLITERALLYANYTHING and it would succeed.

This sounds a lot like Steam, where the name on your profile page is a vanity string that you can change whenever you want, but the actual username in their system is an unrelated (and immutable) ID.

As I recall, GitHub popularized (maybe even invented) the pull request. That's what enabled open source to take off - being able to send patches to (or even fork) other projects with minimal friction.

Look into toybox. It's a tiny reimplementation of GNU coreutils that ships in Android. The author was on the core team for another project in that space (I think busybox). He saw first hand how copyleft sounds good but ends up being l
