I think you are missing another fundamental difference. The NoSQL solutions are more like a dynamically typed language where as the YeSQL ones are statically typed. In NoSQL, I don't have to tell the database layer what I'm stuffing into t

Is their system browser based as well? If so, seems like a clever Greasemonkey could greatly help with that automation (might need an temporary cache there somewhere). Scrape your web report, stuff the data somewhere (locally), then on the

I agree that the answer is not exactly "No", but I disagree with most of your points. Building reusable components, coding at a low level and building a flexible architecture all take considerably more effort than their alternatives, IMHO.

It's not just the commoditization, but our efficiency. Searching for information is oodles easier (to use a technical term ;) than it has been (say pre-google/wikipedia). Furthermore, on-line communities like HN filter up all of the more i

Seems like you could cross sell this to some business travelers. Perhaps also up-selling some professional services (legal/design/marketing). Personally I like having separate spaces for work and home. Sounds like a good idea to partner wi

Computer gigs feel more productive... I can make a computer do much more work than I can. If successful I can effect the lives of many more people with software than with manual labor.

You didn't include the work required for the 99% confidence interval that the original post asked for. It requires statistics, not simple math.

I'd take a little more time to position yourself against them. If your service is simpler and quicker, it would seem that you may be able to poach their customers. Kinda like your competitor has generated your marketing leads for you. Per

I think migrating from prototype to maintenance mode is a continuum. For some reason maintenance mode seems to begin (IMHO) some where around 60%--80% of work for version 1.0. At that point it's too risky not to be testing routinely and t

There's something wrong with this whole line of thinking. Perhaps its the measuring of productivity by loc, or pages of documentation written (shudder). Or maybe its the strong negative tone of the whole document. Maybe it's me, but if a

Perhaps the sports leagues were leaning on them. The NFL, et. al. seem to think they own the rights to any account of the games. I could easily see them thinking you are poaching on their IP (I've always thought these were absurd claims)

Yeah... But rather than just section headings, perhaps complete sentences that you could "zoom-in" to more detailed wording. Or if things seem to be too detailed, you could zoom-out. Seems hard to automate. Better writing could probably so

Excellent write up. I frequently wish descriptions like this existed in a fractal form with ever increasing complexity that could be "zoomed in" (or out) for more or less detail. Many times the problem is the inverse, some overly generaliz

I love the idea of ringing a bell for a sale (when you getting higher rates you could ping less often with a different pitch). I think sounds are a great side channel for event notifications.

That sounds rather normal (reads 10x writes and 100s/1000s per second). As far as I understand MySQL can definitely scale to that. It does take considerable effort to configure and tune it (but any database solution will perform horribly

I agree, the lesson from the post isn't multi-threaded==bad. Processes just make you think more about the data interactions. However, if you are in a multi-process model and using shared memory, you'd better be getting a semaphore for both

Personally I tend to prefer multi-process over multi-threads. I like my IPC to be a bit more explicit. It seems cleaner, better defined and easier to distribute across boxes. Sure it's a slight performance degradation, but you can always
