Regarding the front end, it's exactly what I'm doing right now. I receive the data, do some processing, pack it into json format and wire that using WebSockets to the client. It works really well.

Have you take a look at Cucumber? http://cukes.info/ I don't personally use that (I use capybara for acceptance testing) but it seems to do the job in terms of natural language and "versatility"
