I see void being passed as a parameter list to main in a lot of examples. All of the things I've read suggest that the only difference between having a void parameter list and an empty parameter list is in function declarations, and that th

I think Gruber's underlying point is that exclusive apps are one of the things that helps a platform maintain success, because they are a barrier to exit. You ask, "What thing do you want to do on your phone that Android can't?" This is a p

In Paul's essay, he suggested that a software company was any company that needs to have good software. I would say that Apple fits this description.

SMS and iChat may have the same interface, but they are not mixed in a single client. In fact, Apple does not provide an IM client. The central complaint in this article is that the same message was being communicated over email and SMS, wi

The author isn't recommending that they give anything away for free. He is talking about how to determine a fair price. Your analogy does not apply.

The same can be said of single-core computers, but we have been referring to that as multi-tasking for a long time. If the term multitasking is used commonly to refer to context switching, both in people and in computers, on what grounds do

I see your point. As I hinted at, I think a lack of GPL software in the App Store will have a negligible effect on actual iOS usage. Because of this, it makes people's iOS experience worse without making the overall situation better.

How is this a win for anyone? Apple isn't desperate to have GPL'd software on iOS; they probably like it, but they don't need it. This won't make Apple change their policy on sideloading apps. Furthermore, anyone who doesn't want to subsidi

Revenue is irrelevant. The question is how much profit iTunes draws in. I don't believe that Apple has ever released exact figures, but I've always heard that iTunes is a fairly low-margin business for them, so it's contributions to Apple's

How does Flash compete with the App Store more than HTML5? Since Apple has been promoting HTML5 web apps, especially those targeting Mobile Safari, I find it hard to believe that their hatred of Flash comes from a desire to protect the App

As I understand it, one does not typically buy domains, but rather leases them. Your analogy to other kinds of property thus does not apply to domains.

Personally, there are very few experiences I find more miserable than looking at other people's code. I'm sure other people feel the same way about my code. If I were in this position, I would probably start by looking at the documentation.

I would love to see them release a Mac App Store. Of course, if they made it the only way to get new programs on a Mac, I would never upgrade, but I think providing a central market-place for software could be a very useful thing for a lot

What about the system requirements? As sad as it may be, a lot of people in under-funded organizations are stuck using computers that are 5-10 years old, which may not support Windows 7.

The amount being copied makes a big difference, in terms of fair use. If you're copying the entire page, and showing it to people, then that's a more egregious violation than taking a small snippet to provide context. I'd also say that Go

That's true, but that doesn't make it OK. Google is making copies of other people's work without permission, and displaying them for profit. That is the kind of thing that copyright law was meant to prevent. This should be an opt-in feature

I think the implication was that it is sexist to imply that women have better judgment than men, and that this causes them to stay out of tech. It's the first part that's sexist, not the second.
