Quick tip for anyone making a system with high load and daily or hourly quotas: When an account is created, assign a random start time (e.g. 05:43 for daily quotas or minute 12 for hourly) to measure that account's quotas against. Then you

FastSpring is worth a look. My company (also European) has been using them successfully for subscription billing for over a year. I really like their system.

I doubt there's too much of a learning curve as the new API is pretty similar to Joda Time: http://blog.joda.org/2009/11/why-jsr-310-isn-joda-time_4941....

If you are out (at work or on holiday), but you need a maid or repair person to have access to your house, I'm guessing with this you can: a) grant them access without the hassle of getting another key cut and less of the awkwardness of tru

I am lucky that my business is in a fairly low-competition niche where having a great site really is enough to get in the game. I've not noticed much in the way of link buying amongst the sites in my niche, and link buying is not a world t

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. On the web, it's often the less savvy users that convert best in response to advertising. For example, a lot of money is made online selling payday loans, ringtone-related subscription-billing junk, and

Have you taken a look at FastSpring? A nice, flexible system for recurring billing and one-off payments. They act as a reseller too which makes for simple accounting as you only have one direct customer: them. We've been using them for sev

I think most sites would lose far more sign-ups to a required activation email (going unnoticed in a spam folder or sent to a typo address and assumed delayed and forgotten) than to the occasional rejection of a legitimate email with peculi

If you have one single instance only, I'm not sure there is any point. But if you want your app to auto-scale upwards to add EC2 instances if the load increases, then the load balancer is necessary. It enables all your EC2 instances to be

I've been using the Java version of Beanstalk to run a commercial API - http://www.degreedays.net/api/ - for about 12 months. So far it's been working out very well. I love how you can dip into the EC2 APIs if/when you need to, but it's

Also, cooling systems are generally less efficient than heating systems, which would increase summer energy consumption (and CO2) more than the reduction in winter. That's assuming the overall US climate (by which I mean population- or ener

Average temperatures aren't a great predictor of energy consumption. Yes, warmer winters mean less heating requirement, but warmer summers mean greater cooling requirement. Not such a factor for Jan-Mar in the US, admittedly. Typically hea

I've been very happily paying for a fastmail.fm business account for the last few years. A rock-solid system, and great at handling lots of addresses on multiple domains. No affiliation, just a very happy customer.

That makes sense. I was thinking that supporting the 6 customers might have been easy. Shifting focus fully to other things clearly worked out well for you, and I admire the ballsy decision to do that in spite of the the loss of revenue.

6 customers at $199 a month is almost $1200 per month. Sure, it's not a fortune, but I wonder why it wasn't enough for "leave it running, work on something else, cash the checks, see what happens" to at least be one of the options.

It's possible that could work. Our current testing API is rate limited only on IP address but if we required a sign-up we'd have more options. A free tier couldn't go too far out of control if we could stop taking new sign-ups at any time

When you call your bank they generally pick up the phone. In contrast it seems the only way to get help from Google is to know someone influential or have a high profile blog on which you can embarrass them publicly.
