I did that with this: function z () { if [ $# = 0 ]; then ls -lFGh else cd "$*" && ls -lFGh fi } That way if you don't specify a directory it just does an ls. Edit: and apparently it took away my li

I seem to be getting results from places other than YC; but only on some queries. 'data mining' only gets two results, both from HN. 'machine learning' gets a bunch of results, none of which seem to be from here. Is there a way to limit

This is a repeat of this exact page: http://random.noflashlight.com/ I know you linked it, but it seems better to submit the original.

What would the difference be? I go to a university, but am getting a degree from a college within the university. I would think that means I'll have a college/university degree - I don't see how you can get one without the other.

The problem with using it for that is it doesn't seem to mark which 'entities' are more important than others. So even though it seems to be able to mark proper nouns and numbers, it doesn't differentiate between an 'entity' being the subj

I've always thought that 'Web 2.0' at first just meant that a site had user-generated/submitted content - so by that definition news.yc would be web 2.0 because pg does not post the stories and decide what we see.

Its probably more than just a general UI tweak, but I would definitely recommend switching window managers/desktop environs from Gnome to Ion3. Its made to be navigable with only the keyboard(you can use the mouse, but you don't need it).

I assume its because programming in Java is excruciatingly painful - its syntax just doesn't feel natural and every program is many times longer than a corresponding Python program. Or lisp, I assume.

As for its authenticity, it was on reddit/programming a few days ago - http://reddit.com/r/programming/info/69ftg/comments/ - and apparently one of the reddit guys caused it.

why? It may not be startup related, but this seems like very cool software. I haven't seen the code, but from the list of features and my own experience using it, its very useful.

That surprised me too - but I'm guessing its because their GDP is almost entirely from oil, whereas the US economy is very distributed. Edit: Guess I was wrong.

I have tried this, and it won't allow you to change your information to any common obscenities, etc. A message box pops up that says something like, "Please enter your real name." Maybe its possible if you get really creative, but I didn'

I just upgraded the memory in my macbook pro and I bought the exact same kind I would've bought for a non-Mac laptop. Its my first mac, so I'm no expert on whether it was more expensive before, but its definitely not the case now.

This doesn't seem surprising in the least given that Apple spends tons of money trying to make people switch and I'm sure most Linux developers couldn't care less if windows users switch.

Exactly - given that any day some other site could become the top social news site, it seems weird they would be trying to get such a large/unlikely amount.

That seems like a huge price to pay for digg - especially since I assume the way to make money off social news sites is with ads, and the type of community digg attracts is the type that blocks/ignores ads. Maybe I'm way overestimating how

It seems the only way would be ad support, but that seems very un-Wikipedia. However they make money, I just wonder how they expect to get developers to contribute to it when Wikia will be trying to make money off the developer's work. I

news.yc is really nice looking if you install greasemonkey (ff extension) and the News.YC Enhancements script. Also, I figure whoever wrote that script uses this site, so thanks for that.

This is slightly offtopic, but why in the world do developers make their sites resize my browser window? Not the blog post, but the USA Today coach salary database- is there a legitimate reason for this or do they just enjoy pissing off us

For me, more than I have now. It could be that no matter how much money you make, its always 'more than I have now' (but then again I'm a poor college student so that may just be me). But anyways, my main problem with your original artic

I guess I'm not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that when you don't have money, its much more difficult (maybe near impossible for some people) to find out/concentrate on what else you want out of life. Whereas if money is not an i
