Did you just say that you found the book rather shallow, and that you hope the movie will be more in-depth than the book? I fear you are destined to be terribly disappointed.

Actually, I suspect the opposite is more common, as it was for me -- i.e. that it was from reading Martin Gardner that I became aware of the skeptical movement.

How can you be sad at the end of such a brilliant and full life? I'd give anything to have a tenth of his accomplishments to my name when I die. He introduced so many people to the beauty and sheer FUN of mathematics, it's hard to estimate

It's "known to be crap" among the people who already know the language, because of folks like Seebs. That's the point. It's a little dated now, I suppose, but it may be worth remembering that Schildt's books were very popular at one point.

Well, one of the original goals of the Fields medal was to help entice young mathematicians to stay in academia and do research, in an attempt to counteract the lure of high-paying jobs in the outside world.

I'm not surprised you thought of that; Jessica McKellar's article almost sounds as if it was modeled after mine in places. I'm wondering now if that's due to actual imitation, or a subconscious influence, or if it's just a natural approach
