"shit code" is in the vast minority of code written, most of it ranges from merely crappy to so beautiful you'd auction off your own mother just to bask in its presence a little longer The reason architecture starts mattering

Empathy is the just the newest word for certain people to feel that they're better than everyone else (who lacks empathy?). After a while it gets tiring keeping up with it all, I sometimes think I should try and identify the newest wor

The problem is that tech is always built with hidden assumptions. ALWAYS. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar or naive. Not everyone can work with the assumptions that this tech demands, and not all of the assumptions are apparent (b

SpaceX also doesn't have the track record NASA does, and cannot be compared. In 50 years when they've been working alongside each other, maybe, but not right now.

PHP is a bad example, it was designed around the idea of the OS doing the cleanup for you when the process exited at the end of the request.

I agree with you, when people start trying to make these sorts of arguments I like to link the following video from Richard Feynman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45trtAfWhYg

C# doesn't have unified call syntax, it has extension methods. You're right in that they do allow you to write a function that takes an argument and call it as if it wasn't on that argument, but it doesn't have UCS gene

I would agree with that, but I think a large reason for it is because people don't pay attention to local as much as federal anymore, so it slips under the radar a lot.

You're purposefully misrepresenting what was said, if anyone in this thread needs to get Dang's attention it's you.

I'd give a name to my opinion of Dang, but he'd just mod it. When it's all said and done, you won't win so you may as well drop it or leave HN. Dang considers himself the adult, with people like you as the children. He

you can install win10 directly using your win7 license key if you've already upgraded. I would definitely try that. It's what I did specifically because I've never trusted an OS upgrade. OS's are too complex for that t

That's specifically why I said documentation gives the context. Why the API uses a hash table instead of an array is something for the documentation of said API, not code comments.

In languages that allow you to do things like set the value of enumerations, I always start with 1. The reason being that an uninitialized variable, bad outside input, etc, is more likely to get caught as bad input rather than whatever hap

I'm not a junior developer and I rarely ask for anything on SO. I've just found it to be a shitty experience all around, and as someone else mentioned in this thread, people on that site are bullies.

Why feel something as strong as disgust for a person doing what he can to keep his question alive on a website on the internet? If this person has found a reasonable way to keep his questions alive he should be applauded.

You nailed my issues with the steamlink. There currently isn't enough explicit support, and when you run into a game that runs as a win32 executable with menus, etc, it completely rips you out of the experience. I think it does a pret

like I said, that's a strawman. C++ has had new/new[]/auto_ptr since C++ 98, so almost 20 years. The ideas of smart pointers have been around for a really long time as well. Then there's the C constructor convention th

the idea of cost-free came from C++ where the belief is that you don't pay for what you don't use. The underlying meaning there is that you don't pay the cost of virtualized function calls if you're not using polymorphi
