This is insightful. In some sense, the only distinction a "pure" function has over "non-pure" is that it declares all its inputs/outputs (as function parameters and result). We say that a non-pure function has "

I found MobX working wonders for React UI responsiveness. You can cut-off large parts of rerendering more-less for free, without worrying you'll cut-off too much. I just wish MobX was statically typed, so I could know what has been obs

Assuming a non-clustered index on FOO (and no predicate pushdown by an optimizer smarter than MySQL's), the first query will scan the index on FOO and perform 150000 seeks into clustered index (only to discard 149985 of them): SELECT *

It still scans the index, but it doesn't fetch those rows that will be discarded. After it reaches the right page, it fetches the rows themselves. So it doesn't exactly avoid the wall, but it can push it considerably further awa

I think this article could have done a better job explaining the underlining data structures, which would have then given the readers much better intuition why this can actually work, and when . In a nutshell, a table can be: - Heap-base

One more thing: a heap can be easily packed contiguously in memory, while the tree nodes are typically dynamically allocated. This helps with allocation pressure, which is often the "hidden" cost people don't pay enough atten

I don't think you can have a "sliding window" of time just based on that. The next time you call the function, you need to count how many of the old calls are still "unexpired". This number (potentially) gets lower

I have an uneasy feeling whenever I see a path parameter declared as string. Path is not a string - it's a sequence of path components and should be treated as such by our APIs. A path should be parsed once - on user input - and then u

On the exception receiving side... The key, IMO, is to assume that every line of code can throw until proven otherwise, and then make sure you clean-up after yourself, using RAII in C++, `using` in C#, savepoints in SQL or whatever else mec
