So cool! I worked on this project during my internship at JPL. I’m sure they hucked all my code in the trash as soon as I left, but it was a fun summer. :)

In my experience, bad copy pasted code results in an annoying afternoon of tech debt repayment and fixes. Badly abstracted code results in months of tech debt repayment. Of course, the answer is “don’t make bad abstractions”, but we all kno

Durable objects seem so cool but the pricing always scares me. (Specifically, having to worry about getting hibernation right.) They’d be a great fit for our yjs document based strategy, but while everything in prod still works on plain ol

Congrats! Game engines seem like such a gratifying pursuit that flexes every aspect of one’s skills. I just started reading Game Engine Archicture; if I can ever make the time I really want to take a crack at an engine.

We built LegendKeeper using Yjs! (It's a mapping app as well, but fantasy). Ended up rolling our own sync server to handle large scale multiplexing, as we have D&D game-masters with 25,000+ documents to manage. (I don't know h

Yeah, their approach to the business is great; I find it very inspiring and hope to do something similar with my own product if it’s financially feasible.

Huge obsidian fan, but I do think it’s interesting how the plug-in ecosystem interacts with the open format idea. The plug-in system is a huge draw for many people, but you can bit rot your own vault by applying plugins that define their ow

That's great to hear! Always happy to see LK usage out in the wild. Definitely Notion-inspired! Over the next few months we'll be putting more of our own spin on it, though.

LegendKeeper will never have ad placements because of how ugly they are. Personally I wouldn’t be able to tolerate an ad messing up the flow of our designs and user focus, lol. Idk how others do it; we also never relied on ads in the first

Same; got a study after having a really bad bout of headaches and mood swings. I was suffocating in my sleep with 60AHI. Anything above 5 is apnea, above 30 is severe. From what I understand, apnea is insidious because it develops slowly an

At the $800 - $2500 price range, that sounds awesome, but I'm in a market where $50 is considered outrageous. It's self-inflicted pain, I know, but we make it work.

Certainly! It's what we do currently-- it's just not viewed as "true local-first" if you do this, as there's a server-auth-dependency by definition. Local-first has a bit of FOSS-esque philosophy mixed in. (Which I

The way we handle it is: subscribing = full access, non-subscribing = read-only access. Philosophically we'd probably not be viewed as "true" local-first software given this constraint, but like you said: we can't give a

The product is not just the program. People don't just care about function, they care about how the app makes them feel, how it affects how they think others perceive them, etc. -- the companies that can afford to market and make their

Convenience is king. As life piles up (errands, parenting, everything), cognitive capacity goes down and the more the user wants a "push button do everything" solution. They'll trade autonomy for ultra-convenience + a droppe

Which is wonderful for users that want that and are savvy enough to understand the limitations! However, hobby apps will not be able to afford designers or support or long-lived servers. As long as the social contract is clear, it's a

Yeah at the end of the day, we'll do what lets us keep doing. It does suck that local-first seemingly does not have monetary alignment with public benefit though. A robust local-first app (if we're including syncronization too) is

I love local first, but I struggle with how to monetize truly local-first applications. I know that's not everyone's favorite topic, but I've got bills to pay and payroll to make. Our product is about 80% local-first, with li

Quixotic features like functions and variables. Edit: Sorry, was cranky from being hungry. I take issue with “useless in the real world.” The first chapters introduce variables, functions, recursion, and lambdas, and not much more than that

A nice thing about tw is you can set your colors, paddings, etc, to resolve to CSS variables. That + some tweaks to the tailwind config, you get a nice themeable setup that doesn’t deviate too far from vanilla tailwind, imo.

Everyone's paying. We have a 14-day free trial, but otherwise don't really jam with the freemium thing. Gets too overwhelming in the B2C space. I've updated the post to include that it's paid. > My opinion, no. It wou

This is how LegendKeeper’s Discord is. I interact with my users daily, reply to bug reports and feature requests, and overall shoot the breeze. Been a great way to stay close to the community, and been going on 5 years now. :D
