My dad used to teach kids with disabilities. He always used to tell the other teachers that the disabled is a club anyone can join at any time, without notice.

I recommend StreamToMe. It's the best $3 I've spent. Transcodes on the fly, works great. We watched cartoons in the car. (iPad tethered to my 3g android phone).

I occasionally do this as a freelancer if it's a larger project. If it's something small, I don't mind answering a few questions for free. I'm visually impaired, as are my father and daughter. I have an interest in making the web more acces

Rails has been dealing with the 'can't scale' accusations forever, even though it has been scaling fine for a lot of people for at least 4 years, if not longer. But remember that a lot of people who start with Rails are not sysadmins, and m

It's been like this with Ruby since certain developers have been pushing harder for 1.9 adoption. A new developer is gonna pick the higher version number, cos higher version means newer. They're then gonna wonder why some gem doesn't work :

Yeah but my physician says it's better to look slightly downward at the screen. Which is kinda what you see with some of the standing desks too. Totally not an ergonomics guy... I just know what I was told. :/

Actually my Macbook Pro has improved my ergonomic situation. I use the built-in zoom tool, (it's the reason I bought a mac, as I have low vision) and because of the zoom feature, I can put the laptop wherever I find it comfortable but still

I use IRC every day. I use it to work with others on opensource projects and many of my past interns and I use it to stay in touch daily, creating a very helpful network. My current interns can get help from not only ne, but people who used

Kinda, but no. You can do simple things quickly with Rails. That means you get to the harder things faster. You very quickly discover that you have to learn Ruby if you want to do anything beyond scaffolding. I think that's what he means by

Well, we run RailsMentors ( http://www.railsmentors.org ) for that reason, stop by, sign up, and see if you can find someone to mentor you. It's all volunteer, there to help newcomers get excited about Rails. Doesn't cost you a think, excep

I know I'm in the minority here, but Photoshop is worth every penny to me. I don't upgrade to every version (I usually skip every other one) but I don't steal it, and I certainly don't find GIMP to be an honest substitute. If you dabble in

Ok, I'm totally a noob with Clojure, but I thought all I had to do was java -jar ~/clojure.jar and I got a REPL. Did something change recently? This seems like an awful lot more work than it should be.

In my experience, "getting stuff done" in the academic world isn't about making money for the business owner. It's about teaching students. So I think your statement is a little unfair. Network admins, DBAs, and developers have to keep the

Is Microsoft's non-support for WebM any different than Mozilla's refusal to let me play H264 videos in their browser? You can't just look the other way cos you like the underdog. To my mind it's the same thing. My mac can play h264 videos,

WebM is not a "web standard" anymore than H264. By that logic, if Mozilla really supported web standards, they'd support h264 playback since Safari, Chrome, and IE will. Even if I have an h264 codec on my system, FF won't play the stupid

I immediately embraced the 20 sources. I can't honestly pay attention to any more than that. This keeps me focused - I have to choose what feeds I'm going to watch. I looked at my google reader feed and honestly I had over 100 feeds in ther

With Heroku, you'd store those 20gb of images on S3. Then you have thm in development as well as production. And once they're up, you don't have to move them around.

A subset of users care about URLs when a hierarchy exists. I've seen it happen during usability testing. /projects/25/tasks shows the tasks list... and I've watched the user delete the end of the url to get to /projects. Most users don't

Dunno about that. I have played the "Minus World" since 1990 when I found out how to do it from my friend. I try it on tons of emulators too, and they all seem to handle it pretty well. I don't recall crashing an emulator with it, and I've
