Australia is in the unique position of having abundant reserves of gas, coal and uranium but through what is probably blatant corruption the most expensive power prices in the world. The gas is exported at a fixed cost to Japan and other co

You can control it through an environment variable or through code https://golang.org/pkg/runtime/debug/#SetGCPercent

I did toy with that a bit but don’t remember it making any difference. I might try it again though. From memory though it might work better to move he switch to a hash which should allow it to compile down to a jump table which would be fas

Interesting. Actually being blocked on reads sounds about right. I’ll try running the benchmarks again one of these days. Probably after I get access to the Go GC controls that are apparently on the way.

Not that I didn’t believe BurntSushi but I wanted my own validation. Not suprised you got the same result. I think with whitelisting there is probably no need to mmap for these tools. The nested comments and strings will probably slow you d

Depending on what you are working on you can pre-allocate everything you need and then turn the GC off. You can even do it in code which is nice. Similar approach to Java.

Nice to see this hitting the front page. None of my submissions of it ever did. Happy to answer any questions about it here should they come up. Certainly the biggest thing I took away from this was that the GC in Go is a far larger overhea

Not really that surprising. I spent a good chunk of time trying to make a Go program as fast as a well written Rust one (tokei) which I wrote about here https://boyter.org/posts/sloc-cloc-code/ and in the end the

It’s particularly bad in Australia and South Australia where this battery is was the worst. Australia despite having abundant reserves of coal, gas and uranium as well as excellent solar and wind locations has some of their most expensive e

It’s also a national embarrassment according to the government treasurer who likened it to Australia’s tourist stop big things such as The Big Banana. What I love about it is that it’s forcing the governments hand. They have vested interest

Tmux and ripgrep are two that I use daily. I used to use cloc then switched to tokei, then to my own scc which I use frequently along with lc. Hyperfine is something I have been using a lot and despite having ripgrep I still use grep often

I must confess based on the strength of the argument buruntsushi had with the Ripgrep comparison I switched from ag to rg and have not looked back. I was a daily ag user but I don’t need the advanced regex support and I do like the speed.

Nice to see lc included in the tests. It was my first Go program. I will have to see if I can improve both the accuracy and performance now.

Same. Now that I am on the other side I send out a short piece of code and ask the person to point out all the errors in it. There are about 20. It takes about 5-10 minutes of the candidates time and I have had a lot of success with it.
