Running on Mac OS X is a pretty tough sell, though. Ultimately, it's far more expensive than comparable servers running Linux or even Windows. Most of this is that there aren't many people offering OS X based server solutions, but even if y

As a developer, that is sound advice. As a user, it's silly. I don't get to decide which websites use flash and which don't, and technical limitations don't dictate which sites I want to visit.

by boucher 17y ago
It really isn't. Mainstream sites still play video with Flash, and I doubt that is going to change in 2010. But, we'll see.

This is the truth. A well written blog post, with good supporting materials, can easily take a day to write, and then a day to deal with the "response."

Delicious Library. Took Shipley over four years to ship version 2, and it was rewritten at least once, and possibly twice, before it ever saw the light of day.

Although I would expect that to be true, It doesn't appear to be. This post doesn't break out profit by specific product, but that last post that did so indicated that the desktop version of the app accounted for 80% of the revenue. That ve

For an extremely loose sense of the term physical violence perhaps. In any case, I suspect you'd be hard pressed to find a single case of Copyright enforcement in the United States (or any other first world society in modern history) where

The opposite approach isn't proven either. In other words, there is no data on the issue. So you too are, in essence, making a decision based on faith. Although I can't find a recent source, it has historically been the case, and probably s

Do I really need to point out the ways? Agree or disagree with CopyLeft, this is just extreme: - Applying the coercive machinery of the state in this way always boils down to the threat of physical violence for non-compliance. - [you've] gi

The argument would be that they've already burned those bridges. In other words, all that matters here is really how vulnerable they are to Apple's legal threats.

But are standards committee members actually bound by promises they made to said committees? In other words, as members of the organization did they sign a legally binding contract? It may be a jackass thing to do, but if they aren't actual

Have to disagree. Releasing code doesn't imply any obligation to that code. If it did, the volume of open source code out there would be a fraction of what it is right now. People are constantly changing directions, and constantly trying ou

I tend to agree. This line looks like a prime example: menuButton('Inbox', '-176px 0', '166 24'), menuButton('All', '-160px 0', '0 2 166 24'), menuButton('By me', '-192px 0', '0 0 166 24'), menuButton('Requests', '-240px 0', '0 0 166

I didn't say anything about layout. In fact, I specifically said I was not judging the framework in that post. I was responding to a comment claiming that the only thing missing was "AJAX." Not only do I think that comment doesn't make se

Because Apple has about 10,000 non-retail employees, while Microsoft has about 90,000.

"Just the ajax parts are missing" I don't know what that really means, but I can tell you that it's disingenuous. First of all, on the face of it, it's not really true. Menus don't work. Toolbars which have overflowed don't work. Buttons (e

Why shouldn't they write about big companies, and why can't they do both? Without taking sides, you can't place the blame squarely on anyone here. Lawmakers make mistakes and corporations choose to exploit those mistakes. Lawmakers obviousl

There was a license file in the uncompressed files, and it was, if I remember correctly, the Apple Open Source License. This may have not been intentional, but if you archived that license file along with the rest of the repo (or if its sti

The median? It's almost certainly less than $10, if it isn't $0. Most apps don't ever make any money, especially after they disappear from the new releases list. You'd have to look at all applications which sold at least $1 in that month

Just better design would solve this problem. Make more effective use of horizontal space.

I've never understood the appeal of embedded labels ("email" inside the email input field instead of next to it). In general it doesn't look any better, and the space saving is minimal. It's also an accessibility nightmare, and as the artic

But you are also speaking in broad strokes. For example, "DOM Traversal" is something that IE can do. How critical are the specific features of DOM Traversal that the ACID 3 test is testing? I don't want to spend much time doing bug triage

by boucher 17y ago
In my mind, this still isn't a particularly good reason to do it. Let's say the last 9-12 months is when ACID3 became compliant in most browsers (I think it's actually less). That means, by definition, only apps written in that timeframe ev

I think that almost by definition tests which fail in every major browser shouldn't be considered a high priority. It's nice that they have been fixed in some browsers, but I can't fault IE for prioritizing other things more.
