I'm glad you bring up Kojima, because I think he's a master of this New Literalism. I just watched my partner play Death Stranding 2, and it feels like every other cut-scene has an NPC turn to camera and explain the themes of the

Ah, I thought they were a little too funny to be computer generated. Makes sense.

Teenage Engineering has some really obnoxious marketing, but it seems to work. I mean, we're talking about then. Roland or Korg never make hacker news.

I'm still mad at IBM for giving me one of those tests for an internship after 4 years. It required a lot of fast mental arithmetic, which is, medically speaking, not my strong suit. I thought the job was programming computers, not bein

That sounds like you've just made it so your app doesn't work behind a corporate SSL proxy. I really need people to stop rolling there own SSL stores (looking at you python, java and nodejs). I spend way to much of my time getting

I've always thought is should be Azure, Office and XBox, and each should get their own copy of Windows that they could focus on different things while still being largely compatible. Don't know if XBox could survive on it's o

I don't care if Dinosaur BBQ is a tourist trap, it's delicious and I very much miss it. I would definitely conciser moving back to the Albany area.

The joke the article references seems to think this too, saying you'll find real subcultures in Albany. For some reason the article thinks Albany is the county, despite the fact it is a city with a population of 100k and a couple block

Yes! It's in contrast to gimbaled systems. Putting the measuring instrument on a gimbal simplifies the math and often improves accuracy, but at the expense that you need this large moving object that needs more power.

I find markdown to be a more productive way to write prose than HTML. It also shouldn't be too hard to port from one generator to another, given that the content is just markdown.

Yes, understanding comes first and types come second. But being able to comfortably create types for your domain is a good sign you have sufficiently analyzed it.

It's very useful when you're working on numerical software. Often, it's hard to figure out exactly what output your code should return (because if you knew the answer you wouldn't have to write the code), but you can eas

A lot of people are complaining that this seems too "obvious" in one way or another, but I think it can be useful to write down and be explicit about such an important underlying fact of programming. Completely understanding the t

I pretty much always start with types/signatures when sketching out a design. I guess if there is a complicated algorithm, I might start with pseudo code for it, but even then, I probably want to start with what it's inputs are an

Yah, absolutely. In the real world that is absolutely the way to go (and I suspect will be managed by your IDE in a lot of cases), but I wanted to show what it means for CMake to be a generator, and Makefiles are the easiest build system to

Interesting. I think it would be good if you added a section to your README explaining who the target user for this is. Is it for systems that need extensive auditing? Also, what kind of performance hit do you get by doing cryptography for

Yah, I wrote a `f(f^-1(x)) == x` test but ended up cutting for brevity. Also, running through every possible transform seems like a pain to debug if the error is somewhere in the middle. Perhaps it would be better to test every pair using t

But test against what? This only makes sense for the property based testing, but then random sampling should give the same result up to a statistical margin of error (unless there's some specific pathological case). I suppose this is g

100% agree that picking numeric tolerances can be tricky. It is especially tricky when writing a generic math library like you are. If your doing something more applied it can help to take limits from your domain. For the example in the blo

It's a shame that Gitlab isn't profitable. Maybe it's just because I have to use it for work and am therefor familiar, but I've always slightly preferred it to Github. I also never really saw Github enterprise server bei

There seems to be a semi-infinite market for garbage software sold to landlords. At my current place I need an account to unlock my door, a different account to open the garage door (because the garage is managed by a third party), an accou
