Thanks for this, I'll be calling it toothhairpaste regardless of what the marketing department comes up with.

I love to contemplate galactic-scale synchrotrons that accelerate supermassive charged black holes to collide at relativistic speeds. The thought never really goes anywhere, but I'm sure it'd be a spectacle to behold.

That's an egregious abuse of statistics. It seems entirely implausible that the age of dementia onset would not move in parallel with lifespan.

When I've seen parents amuse kids with AI slop, the kids ask for more slop. When I've seen parents amuse kids with improv, the kids participate. Kids love both, and like nutrition... kids love sugar.

If that wasn't the correlation they set out to measure, they'd be accused of p-hacking. Studies like this are useful for meta-analysis.

I've seen a few studies on calorie-free sweeteners inducing consumption thereby increasing calorie intake. If the story here is that eating ultraprocessed foods reduces willpower, do you maintain your dismissive stance?

Kids these days aren't learning Malbolge as their first language and it really shows. I loved Basic, then VisualBasic, then C, and then Perl... and after Perl, I've never really found it challenging to learn a new language. After

Moreover, I've known a few people with extensive facial scarring due to burns. I suspect that they're treated the same as this guy, but the story isn't nearly as "fun."

It's been some time since I last benchmarked defaultdict but last time I did (circa 3.6 and less?), it was considerably slower than judicious use of setdefault.

Just a heads up, this fails to track usage of get and setdefault . The ability to iterate over dicts makes the whole question rather murky.

The confluence of tinker-for-tinkerings'-sake "hackers" and get-rich-quick "hackers" on this site certainly leads to a lot of fun miscommunication.

Individual numbers can be uncomputable! For example, take your favorite enumeration of Turing machines, (T1, T2...) and write down a real number in binary where the first bit is 0 if T1 halts and 1 otherwise, second bit is 0 if T2 halts...

Computing M_a(n) appears to be at least as hard as factoring n for a=1, so I think you're safe here.

I agree that the observation "M_1(n) = n+1 iff n is prime" is elementary. It certainly motivates some intuition behind the investigation in this paper, but I'd loathe to call it obvious. Note that the paper studies equations

Sorry, but M_1 is simply the sum of divisors, and I don't think that was ever a mystery. Specializing the notation from the paper for M_a, to a=1, and writing pythonic with finite bounds for clarity... M_1(n) = sum( m for
