FB search is terrible because there is no incentive for an engineering team to work on it, and in fact maybe quietly discouraged from doing so. FB make money on from the news feed, so any feature that distract users from scrolling down thei

Neat! It's been a while since I wrote Java code. Java8 lambda syntax looks quite reasonable. I'd recommend the author to make "Getting Started" section a bit more detailed. One of the gripes I've heard is that Java

Square root of relevance signals to "smooth" them out? I worked a bit on tuning search results, not at Google scale though and it's long time ago, but taking square root, or even logarithm of out of scale signals is a very co

Ok, wild guess here but Sundar is cleaning out the house? It's kind of hard to give direction to some who's been there forever, actually achieved more technologically and financially, and more critically would not listen to you. N

Great points. One thing I would add is to pay a lot of attention to your team's dynamics. One bad (or just not as engaged) team member could derail the whole team's morale. Friction should be dealt with immediately, even if it&#x

There is value in advertising: as an information source and a mechanism to establish trust. The former value has been diminished by the internet (which some people call the information age). Advertising is still valuable for establishing tr

Can you share the requirements that you employer needs? Box has been trying to get into enterprise for a long time, and has many 'enterprise' features, but we all know how well Box is doing financially. I think the problem with Bo

Well, for some people, myself included, the not-going-so-well recent IPOs (Square, Box, etc.) would help deflate the pressure on housing prices in SF/BA. I feel for the workers at these company, but it's becoming impossible to rai

Java has both int (32 bit) and long (64 bit) types. What did you refer to as 'native'? Lucene, the popular core search library, has always used int as internal document IDs. As a result, the number of documents in one Lucene index

It's easy to pay lip service like "We are deeply sorry for those that are no longer part of Mixpanel". I would be interested more in "Show me the money" like talks.

The Twitter engineering team is probably hating this decision. I bet a lot of their infrastructure is built around the assumption that tweet.txt is short :) This has huge implication on the data schema, caching, search, etc.

I think she is already wealthy enough from the VMW IPO (if not even before that). At this time, she's probably more concerned with her long term legacy, so putting this money into a charity account (DAF) is probably the best decision.
