What WebObjects would have allowed us to do today if it hadn't been left to bitrot was write an app's business logic once, customise the interfaces and have a webapp, Mac app and iPhone app all from the same codebase. They would connect to

I read the manifesto; it's troubling for people who, like me, are in support of the general principle of greater transparency but don't support an ideological reading of the US as an authoritarian conspiracy. As for "morally unassailable",

Depends on how much you trust them, really. What you call collusion is, for them, co-operation. There were a lot of powerful internal voices in the security industry against the kind of online information-sharing that makes a leak like this

"All set"? Hardly. You lock it once, but then you fidget and roll over. Oop, need to unlock. So now you have to double-press and try and work the task bar upside down to unlock, then chase the lock button round as the screen rotates to lo

If you have a PIN set for the screenlock you can often need to control orientation from the locked state. Orientation lock is incredibly useful in two key areas for iPad: people lounging at home, and in business. I use the lock all the time

Does Textmate do anything that BBEdit doesn't? There are threads like this all over the place talking about a "vacuum" in the Mac editor market. Meanwhile the daddy of them all has just had another big update.

It might make you sad, but it's spot on. People were sharing MP3 files on usenet pretty easily, back in the day. It would have taken 5 minutes or less to work out how -- even easier than grabbing cookies. It wasn't until Napster made that 0

Sorry, that wasn't really the intention of my example, which was to show the range of government spending. Ultimately, though, it boils down to this: Google isn't doing anything with this money, except earning less than 1% interest on it.

I still maintain that Google can do more good with more efficiency than any government. That's fine, but there are plenty of other people who disagree with the assertion. If the money is in the hands of the government, at least those othe

By adopting the "Don't be evil" motto Google makes this about ethics. If you say that you are going to hold yourself to an ethical standard, that means you will be judged by your ethics, not by your adherence to the letter of the law. But

This is about instant personalisation, where you don't have to log in for any of this stuff to happen. It should be a huge reason to log out of Facebook after every visit (or not use it at all), but 99% of users are never going to do that.
