There's a troubling/fascinating implication here: generally we just want to 'do the thing', but it's rarely that simple. Often to be able to just 'do the thing' you have to game out a bunch of this politic

I assume this depends on who you ask. I bet you could find some Nazis who would say they loove the ideology but they're not too keen on all the killing. Same for lots of communists. So this is basically personal beliefs & interpret

This whole part of it made it seem like a parody to me. It just seemed increasingly farcical -- the desk in the forest? attempting to build a desk setup right on the tow bar? I'm still chuckling. I know it's not a joke but it edge

My ocd stops me doing this. I like to close out the task before I even go home, or I feel like something is incomplete… weird. I am gonna really try implement this now though. Have seen it recommended multiple times.

Kinda curious how the policy might apply to communist accounts. Should they be banned too or is communism less directly associated with mass killing and is more in the legitimate ideology territory? Historically as practiced communism has i

This seems a bit disingenuous. Lawyers DISAGREE on this stuff (as we will see in this case) and a court will decide the reality by fiat.

The work culture seems bizarrely counter productive. Where is real value being generated? It’s a bit puzzling in some ways. I’m somehow assuming that the dysfunction described in the piece is way downstream from a lot of messed up communist

You should be able to tell from the calibre of your people if they can be “trained” to actually do what you’re asking right? It sounds like a combination of experience, intelligence, and conscientiousness. The first can be changed but the l

Not nearly the hit piece I assumed but also not super new or interesting. The depth of the Thiel ties were surprising.

It’s just so obnoxious is the main thing. Imagine citing every piece of software one uses for writing a paper — the citation list would be endless. C, Unix, Fortran… the list goes on. Why is this particular utility so different and special?

Though if they didn’t say they were doing that we wouldn’t know the method was invalid. Further, that other video would have its own existing uid, so in theory we could know if they’d duplicated it to thwart these measures.

What’s the general solution here? The problem is misalignment of incentives. But paying people more won’t magically fix it. Is it that mgmt needs a lot more technical understanding? This crops up all the time you’d think there’d be a well w

I mean to take the evopsych spin off it and just distil what you’re saying: “language is a tool we use to do stuff in the world.” Notwrong!

Yikes wait so is there no way to guarantee against this? Like if I buy a 4K MacBook Pro second hand on eBay surely I am able to guarantee they’re not gonna brick it on me in six months?!

The solution is simply to give the consumer the choice. Some will want theft protection and some won’t. Problem solved!!

Marco Arment has the most interesting take on this, and it's made me change my mind on the topic. The whole post is short and worth reading -- https://marco.org/2021/09/13/future-of-the-app-store -- but

Totally agree. I resent the fact that they’d try cash out that way. At least ipo or something. More fragmentation is good for preventing monopoly.

I’d agree with the idea of just trying to build something in public, and ideally something people might use. Or which you yourself would use. It at least demonstrates competence and drive and at best could become something bigger.

The stuff about having a clear model of the reader and the purpose of the report in relation to them was alone worth the price of admission. Such fundamental advice that applies to all writing — but easy to forget.

Problem with bigrams is that it will create a lot of nonwords. In the example given 你好世界 we’d get one bigram 好世 which no one is going to be looking for. Lots of wasted space in the index.

Feels like this is the most honourable and sensible approach: everyone tightens their belts as you transition out and they clarify the new direction and make a new hire. You’re out of the picture with probably little or no equity as they do

The idea is lovely and really appealing — I think the main reason it hasn’t gone that way is because this technology is inherently about leverage and scale. Write code once, run it a million times for little marginal cost. All structural fo
