Another question: when he uses the CNC to move the sensor around, isn't he also changing the reflective surfaces in the environment? Would this not produce inaccuracies?

Cool demo. Turns out it kind of ruins the game because it makes the task of timing turns so much harder, but there was no way of knowing that until you tried it :) Great experiment, though!

It sounds like you're requiring users to sign up too early. Why not try to figure out what information they can only get by signing up and giving that to them up front? It doesn't add to your numbers, but it may lighten your memory load.
