I think what you are trying to say is: "because UTF-8 has invalid character sequences, we could potentially use one of them to represent end-of-string, which would allow us the flexibility of a null-terminated string (not keeping track of t

> Q: What do you think about BOMs? > A: Another reason not to use UTF-16. UTF-8 has a BOM too, even though byte order is not an issue in this encoding. This is to manifest that this is a UTF-8 stream. If UTF-8 remains the only popul

Disclaimer: I don't work for Yelp but I have created other user-ratings-based sites before. It's not entirely fair to criticize Yelp for under-emphasizing negative reviews. One of the big hurdles to overcome on a user ratings site is that

This article touched a nerve for me. I haven't always been in computer science. I actually minored in English in college, and now I'm finishing up a MS program in CS (though I've always tinkered and programmed computers). I have a tendency,

+1 I really hope this trend of adding uber whitespace is short lived. On a site like this, I feel like the designer's goal should be to get as many links on the screen as she can without me feeling the site is overly cluttered. Solving that

I recently read an article on HN about how the value of an idea comes from execution, not from just having it. That ideas bounce around a lot before they finally find a good home. It was such a romantic image that I now feel compelled to in

I get some strong easter egg vibes from the links on the 4 dots, but they don't seem to actually accomplish anything.... Update: Eureka! That's pure awesome.

Glad to help :-) Personally, I would drop "Powerful Shortcuts" and "Convenient Both Ways" as neither one adds much for me. The first seems obvious -- not like a cool feature. The second just makes me nervous -- are you likely to forget impl

Congrats, looks like a cool app. My first thought is "why do I need this?" Your site doesn't answer that for me. The intro video certainly sells me that it's cool, so that I am trying hard to think of a reason that I need this "note-taker".

How can it be fair to have up to a $150,000 penalty at stake when going to trial, yet allow a $750 penalty to suffice if not going to trial? I'd pay $750 even if I was fully innocent, just because the massive risk of losing and lawyers fees

I wonder how conflated the ideas are a "dictionary" versus a "hash table" are in a lot of developer minds (a dictionary is an abstract data type that makes no guarantees about how it's implemented, while a hash table is a specific way to im

There are a couple forces at work here. First, the tech/hacker world tends to be male-dominated, which creates a male-oriented culture, which reciprocally draws more men, and the cycle continues. We want to break that cycle, and a good way

Re #2: I'm also curious about how you go about deciding what UI elements should be on the page. When I sit down to design a UI, I have the hardest time deciding on what blocks to plop down. Should 'this' be a button or a link, or should 'th
