Thanks for the reply! Maybe I should clarify that students in my classes only get As if they fully earn it on the assessments. Bad performance doesn't get As, grade grubbing doesn't work, etc. However, I find myself capping the di

Thanks for the link. There's a great point in there about how adjuncts are under much more pressure here than tenure-track.

To put this another way, hopefully these fees could pressure manufacturers to produce vehicles that are just as useful, but don't create as bad externalities (pollution, danger).

As a professor, I'll put out there how I'm currently thinking about grade inflation in my case. Classes of let's say "Type 1" have lots of students and very specific learning objectives. I need to make sure everyone

Says who? I think the idea of "purpose" of a company is very nebulous and interacts opaquely with: the "incentives" of a company, the societal purpose for having companies, the mission statement of a particular company,

This link is fantastic. The exponential method was new to me, and the connection to the Gaussian method was nice.

I agree on the benefits of multiple candidates, but you might be underestimating the possibility of long-term change in the two-party structure due to ranked choice voting. It allows third parties to slowly gain voteshare, power, and influe

Yes of course it does and Knuth is well aware (as am I to a lesser extent), but I’m just saying I don’t think it’s relevant to the point he’s making here.

It sounds like he's just talking about using variables to solve equations. I think the point he's making in that section is just about learning a good process so you can solve harder and harder problems, e.g. Problem 1: Two number

Wow, this was great. Thinking about codes and permits, I think the idea of self-reinforcing change is interesting here. As more people rent or frequently buy/sell, it makes more and more sense to have strict safety codes and permitting

I don't think the opposite of single-page app is multi-page app. The opposite is not an app at all, it is a "webpage". My viewpoint here: https://notan.app/

There is an extremely important difference between "every woman has fewer children than her mother" and "on average a woman has fewer children than her mother". You can see that in the first scenario the human race dies

A variant on this is to pull 3 ballots out and take the majority (if none, keep pulling until there is a plurality then stop). This would make the extreme outlier results less likely, but still maintain most of the properties you said. For

These comments don't seem very relevant to stablecoins such as this one, which are algorithmic rather than backed. (Although they are now trying to back it, but that's not how it's designed.)
