This makes CPL seem like a pretty odd choice of language for such a widely-read magazine article. He couldn't have expected his readers to be familiar with it, especially since the language was still changing at the time. Did he think it w

> Let’s compare Apple’s cash hoard against countries’ cash hoards rather than their GDP. Agreed. The comparison doesn't make sense as the numbers don't have the same units. $ vs $/year.

I think "More often than not" vastly overstates it. It's much more common in baseball, with its extensive farm system, or football with the large number of position coaches, but even there it's the exception rather than the rule.

The problem with that approach is that the asker needs to post follow ups and respond in thread. I don't know how Quora handles it, but it sounds like more work than PG would like to put into any feature with such little benefit.

As reemrevnivek explains, the answer to "25% of what?" is the issue here. An exponential decay can be described with the same words.

"Links appear to die at a steady rate (they don't have a half life), and you can expect to lose about a quarter of them every seven years." Is this self-contradictory, or is just poor wording of his findings?

Very little, I think. Jupiter-mass planets weigh nothing compared to stars, and this only says they only outnumber stars 2:1.

That's exactly what it is. It's the difference between estimating mass based on visible light and estimating mass based on gravitational effects. If both those estimates are accurate, it implies the existence of a lot of non-luminescent m

Sure. Another alternative is to pull the try/catch/finally into a separate function that just returns the value. But that's not always convenient, YMMV, etc. Either way, I'd consider it just an occasional annoyance (occasional because fr

The "x-figure" notation is essentially logarithmic with an offset: "6-figures" = 10^5. Therefore, "mid-six-figures" should be roughly 10^5.5 or $316227.
