But, this should not have taken three hours. Seems like most of that time was spent waiting for unexpected[1] blocks. Why context-switch if it is possible that you'll need to do again in two minutes? [1] Of course, when does web conferenc

Agreed, but if you are forced to use VS2010[1], it's nice to have the keybindings. [1] Yes, you can survive without the IDE if you are doing .NET development.

I use this daily in VS2010, and have used ViEmu in previous VS versions. Generally, I like it, but it can be a bit sluggish at times. The only plugin I have running is JSLint, so I suspect it's VSVim causing the problems (though it only ge

Yes, me too. The Vim extension is quite nice, but I wish it could do buffers rather than tabs.

Yes, this. About a year ago, I finally bothered to understand the buffer concept in vim (after a brief stint in emacs), and suddenly any tabbed editor felt clumsy.

I'm not suggesting you need to learn the flavor-of-the-month, merely that you don't become so comfortable in your current toolset that you perhaps can't quickly learn something new. For me, it's a matter of assessing whether, in certain in

I think your writer analogy is a bit flawed...it may be more of a question of a poet trying to write creative non-fiction, or a novelist writing sonnets. The language is the same, but the framework is different, and in some cases, you may

I would say "as much as ever," but I agree with your basic premise (as a guy with a philosophy degree). I'm not sure philosophers are disappearing from the public consciousness--rather, they are being replaced with pseudo-philosophers. I r

I don't think it is poorly worded, though this sentence is a bit clumsy: The existentialists argue that any formal, self-consistent religious structure is necessarily broken -- God is dead -- not that the essence of religion, finding meani

Ivan Illich's vision for education may finally come to fruition. Matt could have expanded his risks a bit more, at least to point out that no system will ever be perfect, and, ultimately, every student is different. Completely razing the c

This is a good point. Personally, we often hire accountants to minimize our tax burden, yet when companies do the same thing, we like to label them as "evil" (at worst) or "shirking their duty" (at best).

That's certainly plausible, but given everything we hear and know about Google screens its employees, is it indicative of a problem that their contractors pull off stuff like this, even if it wasn't condoned by Real Google Employees? If yo

It strikes me that the FDA is powerless in the face of the corporate lobby. While allowing CAFOs (among others) to "police themselves," the FDA aggressively pursues raw milk producers and farm-to-table organizations [ http://farmtoconsumer

It's simple - when you are working, you aren't free to take long and/or frequent calls from family/friends; or go fetch grocery even if you are working from home. When you are at home, unless it's a serious outage, you don't take unnecessa

why do most programmers work so hard at pretending they're engineers? In my experience, this is a regional thing. For my first ten years in the industry (on the east coast), I never met another programmer who called herself an engineer.

But "google" is pretty normal, right? Or "yahoo?" Or "bing?" Your point is well-taken, but I think it's just a matter of normalizing the name. Granted, "duck, duck, go" doesn't roll off the tongue as smoothly as the other services, but I

One thing indicator I like use for "cultural fit" (as we don't have a lengthy interview process for our team) is how much the interviewee asks about our team. Are there any questions? A few generic questions? Or some deeper, probing ques
