As mentioned in the article, we dropped the 1-cent coin in Canada over a decade ago. Nobody cares. We also dropped the $1 and $2 bills, years back. I'm guessing there will be a $5 coin soon ... but none of this matters much anymore,

Based on the first link, it seems as though zero and upper-case "O" are very similar. (My eyes cannot discern a difference, but I admit that my eyes are not top-notch.)

I haven't given Skype a thought in years. I wish I could say the same for Teams, that thing that administrators seem to love and users seem to hate.

LaTeX is still very much in favour in my field of geophysical research. I believe that the same is true across most fields that rely on mathematical notation to explain things in written form. I've never found it difficult to write i

Thanks for the link to the randomly-chosen paper. It really brightened my day to move my eyes over the craziness of this text. Who needs "The Onion" when Springer is providing this sort of comedy?

In my world, that row has an 'esc' key (which I type every few seconds, as a longtime vi/etc user) and a fingerprint key. The keys in between are a mystery zone. If apple move the 'control' key to the 'caps lo

This story took place when I was in high school. At university, my electronics professor had one of these. He adored that little thing, and all the students were jealous, but they were really expensive so we all used slide rules. At a po

It's a long time since I thought about doing Leroy lettering, so I was delighted to see the tiny clip of someone doing that. My thoughts on Leroy were a bit divided, I have to say. When I was young we were first taught how to letter by

This is a good resource, and pretty much what I tell students in my classes. I take great care to explain how to write symbols, and I also give multiple pronunciations of the Greek letters. Students with math and physics backgrounds are fi

As has been noted by others, the emoting is a distraction. I could only watch this for a few seconds. Another thing: why are they reporting speed in miles per hour, and altitude in feet? Surely anybody interested in space is familiar with

Balance is the key, but if I only had a debugger, and not the printf option, I'd be working more slowly and swearing a bit more. I work in a natural science, and use computing for numerical simulations and data analyses. For coding pro

Why is it that pretty much everything Knuth writes is wildly detailed but yet, somehow, deeply engaging? Maybe I'm such a fan because of many great experiences with tex (and latex). The output is just so beautiful. And the notation (

This is a very good point. And it works across the board. The Vietnam War led to many bright and ambitious young people leaving the US. I know. Many of them were my teachers.

This is a well-informed article, with some very compelling graphics. I don't care a whit what is said about politics or policy, because I doubt that many Nature readers will need help in making decisions about such things. For me, the

I'm sure this will be useful for some folks, but I'll stick with 'git' to track changes and 'make' to organize my work. It seems as though this project is a sort of system for creating Makefiles, and that would

I've learned that many students lose interest about 2 slides into a presentation. The solution is simple. Don't use presentations. Spend your time with the students by talking with them. Use the board for sketches, mathematical

There's a ton of literature on the ideas and the caveats. Perhaps https://web.whoi.edu/ocb-fert/scientific-literature/ will be a useful, although somewhat dated and limited, introduction to the fertilization

I would expect a bit more backwards compatibility for R packages. When I open a package.Rproj file with RStudio, it has GUI elements to build the package, to test it, etc. When I open it with positron, it is treated like a text file, at le

The "This message can't be saved" text is not that bad, actually. The important thing is that the second part tells the user what to do. The first part could be rewritten "An error occurred" and that would be fine,
