Yeah I guess "extension" is not a precisely defined word. I wanted to make sure other readers didn't interpret like "generalization", meaning that the original narrow concept is precisely a special case of the exten

I would not call the SVD an "extension" of the eigen decomposition. The SVD is also defined for square matrices and is not equal to the eigen decomposition except for the case of symmetric matrices. This leads to the question: for

I've been pretty unenthusiastic about the idea of replacing my Macbook Pro after they removed the MagSafe connector and HDMI ports. However, if the ARM laptops run cool enough to actually use on your lap, it might be worth it. Knowing

Matlab is very strong for controls, well beyond anything I've seen in Python, but for general numerical work and plotting I feel its advantages over numpy+scipy+matplotlib (if any) cannot justify the cost and loss of freedom.

Really? I thought the simplex method was kind of the opposite of an interior point method.

Imo, time spent on estimating would usually be better spent on design review and careful thinking about what the product should actually do. In a project with clear goals and vision, it's usually not hard to see what needs to be done.

I think this might seem more interesting for programmers who are mostly used to working with human readable textual serialization formats.

Pixel-aligned sharp edges were super important on low-DPI displays, but they are increasingly less important. A one-pixel line on a phone screen is tiny, so most designs will use lines of more than one pixel. A pixel-perfect 3-pixel line do

conda seems to spend a lot of time in a SAT solver or something to deal with the known NP-complete problem of dependency resolution [1]. Maybe pip doesn't do the same thing for requirements.txt setups? [1] https://research.s

I'm not a DSP person, but I thought the term "transfer function" was more typically used in reference to Laplace transforms of linear time-invariant dynamical systems. Is it also common to use it for state-space mappings like

This is great! I might add a slide or two about Makefiles. Probably the topic is too big and out of scope, but inexperienced Unix users may not realize that they are useful for so much more than compiling multi-file C programs.

I have a Linux desktop and Mac laptop. I am considering installing Windows so I can run this simulator. Maybe that is the real business motivation for its release :)

X-Plane is pretty good. Several of the default small aircraft have a Garmin 530 GPS navigator from that era. It simulates interacting with the with buttons and knobs. Entering waypoint names is realistically slow :)

The aviation community has developed a lot of interesting insights into human decision making. The concept of "pilot workload" is important. Most accidents happen under high pilot workload. An example of high workload is the takeo

Survivorship bias at work. Unix was a reaction against failed complex designs. So was the F-16, maybe a better example in military aviation because the SR-71 had such a unique purpose. Popular and complex things from that era have been forg

I'd say the aerator and toy are analogous to software bugs, but the wheel bearing is a wear item. Even the best-engineered hardware has parts that wear out. That kind of planned maintenance has no equivalent in software.
