Well, except that I don’t think most software authors actually know where it is possible to safely use an int versus one of the fixed width stdint types. In particular, you now need to make sure that your code works correctly no matter wha

It makes me wonder if those yellow cabs are just stuffed full of hard drives to store all their historic data too. None of that data is useful or necessary. I would love to see any “insight” that would beat the knowledge of a basically com

Neil Postman covers this in amusing ourselves to death, which is a gomreat book and heavily refers to BNW, but the idea that there is even a thing as a “professional” child-raising “expert” is what is wrong. There are many people who show

I can’t recommend this book enough. Although it was written in 1985, it feels like it could have been written yesterday. It’s amazing how he predicted the actual effects computers would have on western society as opposed to the utopian drea

Where do you pull that 40% of sales from? I think you are referring to online sales, which are ~10% of sales. So a little over 4% of sales

A better version... Common excuses people give when introducing security vulnerabilities are, “but the new way is faster” or “the new way is more clever”. We don’t care. No security vulnerabilities are allowed, regardless of the reason. The

The previous comment specifically says reading to make sure you are voting correctly even if you know how you are going to vote. Having voted in California, I can confirm it takes a sizable amount of time to check your ballot even when you

It appears that the 10 nm problems caught Intel by surprise because they fell into the unknown category. I’m confused why you think that some communication issue follows from that. Intel has a multi year roadmap and long lead times so I don

There is much less value in producing chipsets on the more advanced process line, which would basically waste the investment in the new process. Also depending on the issue it is likely to affect chipsets and cpus similarly so there may not

The current “science as a career” model of science with public grants etc stems entirely from the development of the atomic bomb and World War II resulting in Vanevar Bush proposal of the NSF. I sincerely doubt that science will be practic

Funny because I think a lot of technical people would say that the technical side is the only interesting part of block chain, i.e. it’s a neat data structure. However, every proposed use of it neglects all of the other non-technical aspec

The net value of nearly all data is negative. It’s a liability not an asset. Unless you are actually selling data to customers or solving a specific problem that requires collection of specific data, it’s just wasting the company money. You

Do you have any source for this? It seems with such a small participation rate for thru-hiking, getting any sort of meaningful data about relative abilities would be unlikely.

That article actually says that the average time for women is faster than the average time for men and that the fastest male times are still much faster than the fastest female times. The hypotheses they propose for the difference are eith

That's actually incorrect. Many people believe a quantum computer may be more powerful than a classical computer, but that is definitely not proven and plenty of people also believe that may not be true.

A handle block has access to all variables that are in scope. So if you have partial results that you want to return is a check fails you can return them in the handle block if they are already declared/assigned. The easier way to ha

I wish this was something that people brought up more prominently when discussing cuckoo filters. They fail catastrophically. A bloom filter gradually fails as the number of items inserted increases and the false positive rate tends to on
