"The dirty little secret that I don’t mind saying is that software development isn’t hard. There’s lots of handbooks, manuals, blog entries and Stack Overflow Q&A pages out there that very clearly describe how to work with any developme

I personally think software "engineering" should be considered a craft/trade. We should be apprenticed and developed under the direction of masters. You can learn this discipline on your own, but you'll always be second rate to a developer

In other news, programming is CHALLENGING. Not everyone can learn it and building something that is useful requires skill and experience. Doesn't matter the language, toolkit or number of tutorials at hand - building software is a difficult

I just recently started learning Rails (purely out of interest). Getting any form of Rails installed was a massive pain in the neck. Between GCC issues and architecture issues involving sqlite3 (for some reason), it must have taken over 12

Haven't read Rich Dad Poor Dad but from what I got out of this article and several of the comments here is that the main point is disconnecting your personal time from your wealth generation. Your time is better spent generating products/in

What is a "task board"? "Horizontal scrolling is only really an issue for those users who don't have a decent device for horizontal scrolling" Then why are you developing applications that likely an issue for most people?

Horizontal scrolling is a pain in the rear and I hope most web developers stay away from it entirely. I can't think of any good reason any web page should ever scroll unless your monitor is smaller then 1024px.

I've used Vi(m) enough to know that I'm far more efficient in an editor designed to work with my OS. Knowing Vi (or Emacs) is essential as a software developer, but using it as your local code editor has never made sense to me. What most pe

Until it comes to maintenance time and you discover that your cadre of less then stellar developers has created a "works as indented" pile of excrement that is largely unmaintainable. Then the difference between the best developer and the

"Ultimately, design is what drives business rules and software requirements." Completely disagree: Business Rules drive design, not the other way around. The article muddles together product development and design and calls it the same thi

The code itself is simple enough to function as a tutorial, no? I'd much rather wade through the html and css in a github project then try to decode the ramblings of a hastily written tutorial. I wrote something very similar a couple weeks

I up-voted you because yes, you are correct and I fear people who read the article won't get it. But the article was written to highlight this - when you state honest opinions you ARE being a selfish prick. There is a point in the article w

Totally agree. In addition, PHP is a freely available, incredibly pervasive language that can be installed and run on even the most inexpensive web hosts. There is almost no messy configuration or server setup to be done. So for a beginne

As a "Drupal Developer" I can verify this is so true. It makes hiring competent developers in this space nearly impossible. Most of the people that I compete against know how to barely cobble together a couple modules and think that putti
