They didn't mention having problems with or even measuring throughput in the article, and the number of allocations a program makes is not the only thing that affects throughput. So again, it is unclear why they would spend time optimi

I don't really get this article. It isn't necessary to optimize for minimal allocations if it doesn't affect response time. They mention the new technique was making too many allocations; why do they care how many allocations

At first I was torn on this issue, but then I realized that really it makes no sense for the FCC to be telling cities what they're allowed to charge for this. It is sort of like the federal government preventing a city from charging ta

Yeah I meant "operating systems used by 99% of people". I don't mean to say you need to know C to understand operating systems in general.

I definitely would not consider a CS education complete without C. If you don't know C, that means you don't know how how parts of operating systems work. It definitely makes you a less useful engineer. I don't think people n

Green threads are still far faster mainly because of context switching overhead. This allows you to have many green threads per request without problems. Green threads will probably always be much faster unless we develop a way to speed up

I'm glad it worked for you but usually appendicitis is caused by an infection which will cause sepsis if the appendix ruptures, and fasting won't fix that. If you think you have appendicitis at least talk to a doctor, because if i

I really believe only two levels are necessary most of the time: error, and info. Error is for anything that a dev should be notified about (AKA if you send an error log message, assume someone will be notified about it immediately), and in

They were lying. You can buy the drug however you like. There is no legal restriction (unless you're in Medicare or Medicaid, then it gets complicated). Then again, they also don't have to sell it to you. A lot of independent phar

Somehow a lot of people have got it into their head that all code is art, that everything is always beautiful, that it makes sense to take the time to make a great design for solving every problem, that if you aren't working with beaut

I've worked with both, and BigQuery is so much easier to work with. Redshift does give you more control (to a limited extent) but it takes a lot more work and specialized knowledge to perform simple tasks well. In the article you linke

No, Go is not (and probably never will be) a good language for writing real time programs in. It is a good language for writing video game servers though.

I'm pretty disappointed with the compromises I have to make to use a Mac these days. I'm planning on getting one of the new XPS 15s with an i-9 - so excited!

That style of code is pretty unusual in Java. Most of the time you would just use a for loop.

It's pretty easy to get a merge conflict from a lock file. If two developers add a dependency and then try to merge their changes together, it can happen easily.

I love these scooters! It's such a fun way to get around. There's a charger in my building, so they always leave scooters right outside for me, ready to go when I need them. It's really an amazing experience. For a new user,

I really wish WebAssembly did not use the word "Assembly". It doesn't really resemble any actual assembly language. And if you look at the comments in this thread, for example, a lot of people think it's letting you have

So honestly they probably do. This is useful whenever you want to share and optionally modify some data (especially if it's large). Eg. in a multi-threaded video game, for each frame, you probably have some big block of state, which so

Performance wise, Go is generally in the same "league" as Java. If Cassandra was rewritten in Go, it would not have the same issues, but it would have some new different issues.

At the moment, Go. I like the focus on features that make programmers happy, like `gofmt`. I love that most of the things I want to be able to do are already available as a library - it feels like Python in that regard. I really love how ea

Everyone should probably be paying Tim Pope some sort of tribute for all the software that has been written more quickly because of his plugins. Companies working on other editors should be trying to recruit him!
