To what extent is having a car convenient because we've built our cities under the assumption that people own cars? Where I lived for a year in SF (near Church station) I found that for day-to-day life I never once wished I had a car.

I was wondering recently whether someone could conceivably start a disk-in-the-mail Netflix again, now that streaming sucks so much and every publisher seems to want their own streaming service. My understanding (possibly wrong, I'm no

When I actually calculate the gas cost for a trip in a car, I am usually surprised at how large it can be. I wouldn’t be surprised if the $3 actually is less than the gas cost for many affected commutes. However I think you are probably rig

Riding Caltrain during peak hours is totally fine and not unpleasant at all, particularly with the new trains (I do it most days and am writing this comment while doing so)

> So claiming car drivers do not pay the costs is just plain wrong. We can’t determine that that is the case simply because the cost seems like a lot. California has the highest gas taxes in the US, so even if California is correctly pri

Are you referring to the Jersey City mention when you say counterexample? It’s excellent and absolutely worth celebrating that a US city was able to achieve this for a year, but just like Helsinki’s car-use stats, it was also no fluke: not

I made one of these a while ago in school, it was fun! I think it's a great idea. Mine really had nothing: an overly complicated MCU, since it was provided by the class, but otherwise no need for an OS or anything: https://b

Most places I've lived (not many) use zones for residential parking so a residential parking permit gives you no right to park a car in residential spaces outside your neighborhood. Regardless, the consideration needs to take into acco

I'm not convinced that all of these annoyances are intentional. For example, one post [1] says that it's not clear where to go at the end of a bike path. This could be resolved with a sign that might cost $500 (complete guess) to

It might not be! One difference between Little Fixes and 311-like apps is that I want to foster discussion among residents rather than offer a place to file complaints with the city. Most of the apps that I’ve seen don’t allow discussion. P

In general I completely agree that updating infrastructure to create dedicated spaces for non-car modes is the only way forward. But given how politically difficult it is to change--and especially to take away--existing infrastructure, and

Maybe once we replace passwords with FIDO2 more widely and people no longer have to remember and enter their password every time they manually authenticate, we can shorten up session timeouts. Or, as GitHub does, we can require explicit aut

Indeed we thought this would be a challenge and I didn’t explain this aspect in the blog post. But on this chip, DMA is its own peripheral and the DMA peripheral is not used by the USB driver. Instead, the USB peripheral and the main CPU sh

Agreed. One benefit of the SFI-based approach over typical approaches that leverage hardware like MPUs or this firewall is that we can have arbitrarily many privilege domains. For the security key we only have three (Trusted, USB, and FIDO2
