As a manager, I've seen this play out both ways. These days, great IDEs (and IDE-ish-s) are easier to find (points at VSCode). But just a few years ago the landscape was a bit bleaker, and I successfully introduced Jetbrains/PhpSt

I use the term "holographic" for a reason. The HUD appears to be projected at a distance of, say, 20-30', and is positioned low on the windshield so that it essentially overlays on the road. You do not need to refocus your ey

No, not at all. The HUD is positioned so that you're watching the near-field road ahead. The hologram is projected so that it appears maybe 30' ahead of you, on the road. The HUD also has minimal information. If nav is off the HUD

I don't know which integrators they're using but an algorithm like RKF45 should handle time acceleration with adaptive step sizes no problem. As grandparent said, n-body is very well-known. Regardless, KSP's workaround of usi

NASA's software teams are also remarkably small, and manage to produce code with one of the lowest defect rates of all time. (Space shuttle code had 0 defects in 500k SLOC!) Just goes to show: quality over quantity!

Liftoff and re-entry are completely automated. The astronauts are passengers and don't interact with the craft during these maneuvers. This was the case even for Apollo. The Crew Dragon seats also have physical arm-rest controls. Those

To be fair, I can't think of anything better than LabVIEW for rapid prototyping and development of complex sensor interfaces.

My car has a holographic HUD that displays on the windshield, and responds to hand and voice gestures. (The HUD is _awesome_, but the gesture recognition is hit or miss at present). I agree with you that touchscreens in autos are garbage. H

I don't work in the industry, but I have the training, and can confirm what he said. No AI or ML. We use a combination of closed-form solutions and deterministic numerical analyses. There is no actual need for AI or ML in this problem

I thought what I heard is that the thermal cameras did cut out even in the sim, but that on-ship they cut out differently. My assumption is that this is something that gets fixed on the ground.

I read once that a lot of the cost NASA pays per astronaut is there to manage the overhead of all the bureaucratic stuff and extra regulations required for sending a NASA astronaut up. I believe that it is (/ will be) cheaper per seat

Most shuttle missions had 5-7 crew members. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Space_Shuttle_crews At minimum, each mission had a commander and pilot. Then there were missions specialists and payload specialists, wh

Well, the biggest thing is that it writes the SQL I would hope it to write in most cases, reliably. In particular, I think relations are great to work with in Eloquent.

I've used lots of ORMs too. I have mostly positive experiences with them, but a lot of mixed experiences too. However, Eloquent absolutely is a class above the rest. Honestly one of the best I've ever worked with.

I disagree. I've used many ORMs in my ~20 years, and I've architected and designed several hugely complex systems under non-trivial load. There are really two things I want to put out there: 1) My opinion is that about 90% of your

If anyone else was curious like I was, it looks like yes, most people do write a custom bash script to wrap (or use before) SSH. The makers of knockd also make a `knock` util that serves as a client, but other people also do something like:

What does port knocking look like on the client side? Does ssh have some option that makes it easy? Does everyone just write a custom bash script that wraps ssh client?

I suppose it's a matter of acceptable approximations and cost. If only 2% of players have a high quality surround sound system, and only half of those have a good ear, then you really only have 1% of users who can tell the difference b

Ah, convolution reverb. We've had it for a long time in DSP. Basically what you do is pop a balloon (create an "impulse" -- you can also clap your hands or use an electric arc) and record the echo. This gives you what's

The Arduino IDE is certainly a fork of the Processing IDE. The language is different: Arduino is C/C++, Processing is Java. But Arduino did take a bunch of UX (or call it "DX") from the Processing lang.

One important thing I had to do to learn Godot. I started with the tutorials, but I had to re-create one of their demo games from scratch before it really clicked. Now I'm very fluent in it, and it's been a JOY. I've been bui

Google Drive and Google Calendar permissions are not that great. IIRC there is no distinction between individual CRUD actions, so if the app wants to create a file they also need perms to edit and delete.
