But if that's a problem, then he'd never open source it and just says stuff like "I pushed for open sourcing it" to excite the geeks (which is what I assume is actually true).

If Arrington wasn't completely full of shit, he'd actually open source some or all of it instead of just "pushing" for it. I mean, it's a dead project right? If it's dead, then release what you've got to the community and watch someone else

In other words, if you come on HN spouting bullshit about what OS you host on while asking for help finding a designer, you're probably doing it wrong.

Just to add to what QHoxie said (I worked with him on this project), the site is doing Alexa top 750 traffic. Every page view would hit the db atleast a few times. And it's not that the site just couldn't run off EBS volumes, but we would s

There's lots of types of NoSQL dbs, where would you like to start? Are you looking for a DocumentDB or a Key/Value store or a Graph DB or a column oriented db? Do you have a preference on what language an example app or tutorial is in?

I've noticed it. Especially the anti-37signals comments. I got -4 for saying I agreed with DHH about something.

Redis is almost perfect for a queue because of it's lists and atomic operations. And, most of all, because it's persistent. It's amazing how many queues aren't persistent. I'm glad someone finally did this, it could be a great solution. I'm

Most of the "backup services" (jungledisk, mozy, etc.) do either free or really cheap "personal" backup, but have expensive "business" plans. RubyMine is free for "Open Source".

This is great an all, but it's too bad they didn't just decide to do away with gems and everyone switch to rip. But since they didn't, I'm glad they have decided to effectively move hosting to S3 (which is essentially what this change is ab

This is possibly the sleaziest way to describe what most people would describe as a great paper prototyping session. Everyone should be doing this, it's super easy, you don't even need to photoshop anything, just draw out your interface on

There's no point at which you could be distracted. You write a test, you make it pass. You don't do anything until it passes. As soon as it passes, you write another test. If I want to take a break, I make a test pass, then write the next o

I lived in Nob Hill for a year and it's a great area, except that walking to SOMA you might go through a couple pretty rough blocks and walking home you go up some of the steepest hills in SF.

First I write a test. Then I write just enough code to make that test past. Then I refactor my code so that it meets the 4 rules of simplicity. Then I write another test.

It seems like no one ever asks for enough money. Last week there was a woman on that had invested $100k of her own money into the business and was asking for $50k more. It seems like if she would have asked for $500k or $2mil, or something
