I don't think that is a problem with transfers over SSH. The compression wouldn't cause it to slow down speeds by a factor of 10 so there must be something else that is cutting down the speed. I regularly (and only) transfer files over ssh/

Easiest way would be to check the user-agent string. Or if you use desktop-only apps it will surely ring some bells.

Eventhough I do not read HN through a RSS feed I'd have to agree with you. I have to say sometimes I enjoy reading the insightful comments more then the actual articles, and I can imagine a lot of HN users feel the same way.

Indeed, I've been using this font since watching the railscasts by Ryan Bates and it's great. I was using the standard Monaco before. I don't know why but switching to a new font made me a happier programmer!

Interesting read. I work with Ruby on Rails myself but I'm not that knowledgeable about scaling it. It seems to me they didn't really know what setup they were running if they are wondering what a 'mongrel' is. I hope they weren't trying to

Just using OS X would be a good option for you. If you check out Sharing in the preferences menu you will see you can set it up to allow ftp connections and from within your own network, easy as that! Hope you have a good connection over th
