Would take a lot to make me abandon trusty irssi, but I welcome this. The image of IRC seems tied to mIRC-era UI design and some attribute the current state with competing proprietary chat programs to perceived user unfriendliness of IRC, a

I'm afraid I'll have to be one of the curmudgeonly naysayers, too. The nice thing about Markdown is that the source file is just as readable as the output. Haml and hamdown fail at this. If I'm gonna have a computer parse &qu

What do you mean by modern web? I don't see how modernity implies more load, at least for fork() bottlenecked programs specifically. If you're serving thousands of requests per second, you probably need a pretty beefy server anywa

And nothing wrong with that. Stricter compiler is a good thing if you don't need it to be laxer. My favourite flag in clang is -weverything. Everything I write in C I compile with it and fix whatever I reasonably can.

I find the site a little tongue-in-cheek, but I genuinely like the ideas behind it. I honest-to-$DEITY prefer programming in C to any sort of Javascript. C is kinda hellish for large, complex projects, which is good. The world needs fewer l

A friend of mine in high school tweeted to Mikko Hyppönen (CRO, F-Secure) and invited him with us for a beer. A few weeks later we met with him in Helsinki over a pizza and discussed cybersecurity, arcade games, politics, pinball and miscel

I'm a young adult. I've been on the internet for most of my life and all of my adult life. When the GDPR started to be a hot topic, I decided to check what Facebook knows about me. There are lots of things in there I didn't w

Vim user here. One thing I rarely see discussed is the idea that vim is not about speed. It's about comfort. Maybe hjkl is a little faster than arrow keys. I don't care. I just like doing my editing with less hand movement. I'

Yes, I do think tracking users in the way that is commonplace nowadays is absolutely an ethical issue and I deem it wrong despite its wide spread. I can buy a newspaper (at least one that still exists in printed form) and read it without be

Yes, but at a price and space disadvantage. A set of leadholders to match the gradient of a good art pencil set will cost at least tens, more likely hundreds of dollars. They will also take more space. Clutch pencil leads are not as readily

Pencils are cheap, good leadholders are not. A decent pencil costs 0,50€, an amazing one 2€. Good 2mm leads alone are in the premium woodcase pencil price range. Pencils can be quickly swapped for different hardness. Swapping the lead grade

Those crank operated or electric tabletop sharpeners are great. For a portable sharpener, my personal favourite is the KUM long point automatic two-stage sharpener. The way it works is that it first sharpens the wood leaving a round core an
