This feels appropriate: https://danluu.com/julialang/ tl;dr: Julia is a great idea, but with poor testing and quality control. Community is (apparently) a bunch of dicks. Just to be clear, I don't personally have

This is exactly the main problem with Haskell. A stunning language with a lousy standard library. In my opinion, Haskell should offer arrays and maps as built-ins (like Go) and ship with crypto, networking, and serialization in the standard

Hi Alan, I'm a CS PhD student at Caltech. What advice do you have for young computer scientists, especially for PhD students?

Someone explain to me: Chez vs Gambit vs Chicken vs Bigloo. Which do I pick? Especially interested in parallel/multithreading abilities, standards compliance, and overall performance.

I disapprove of investor's commenting on such cases. Sam has a conflict of interest in this case, and was not even present for the events in question.

Erlang is glacially slow. Even on a 20 core machine, a multithreaded Erlang implementation will usually be trounced by a good singlethreaded C++/Go/Java implementation. All this stuff about multicore scaling is baloney - who cares

He didn't say we need inequality, he said that some inequality was an inevitable byproduct of a robust startup ecosystem and technological progress. In other words, inequality itself may not be desirable per se, but it is a side effect

Too little, too late, IMO. The world has moved to Ruby and Go for the web/cloud and Python for data analysis/scientific computing.

I'm a (male) PhD student at Caltech, and didn't really believe gender bias was prevalent in academia till I spoke with female friends and learned about the kind of problems they faced. Believe me people, the problem is real.

This is interesting, but the benchmarks suggest that LuaJIT usually does as good, if not better. So there doesn't seem to be much benefit to the static types, at least performance-wise.

Thanks for the informative reply. One thing I don't quite know: what is the package ecosystem like? Are packages generally up to date? Do people usually install from source, or use binaries?

Anyone here use NetBSD? If so, what are your thoughts? Lack of USB 3.0 support is a turn-off for me... Will probably go with OpenBSD instead.
