Yes, stepper machines do cost hundreds of millions but then one realizes they handle more than a hundred wafers per hour. At the end the machines do seem cheap.

One can transform AC into DC without semiconductors. Vacuum tube technology is the first thing to come to mind. But it is practical even mechanically if the AC frequency is low enough.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the "storm" word. Phone consumers seem to be a little bit irrational. E.g. friend has a phone with insane screen resolution and refresh rate. People will argue consumers want better batter
