If I completely buy Guzeys citation, sleep deprivation works for half of people temporarily. So, kinda useful but not sustainable. It also ignores memory and other effects sleep has on mood. The point I am making is we can keep throwing new

I'd like to give this a more thorough read, but so far this critique strikes me as done in bad faith. I read the book. I'm also in the middle of a biophys PhD, so I like to think my opinion is "extra super special". Here

This is absolutely fascinating to me. Is there any hypothesis as to why this is? I think its a damn shame where the conversation on depression is going. Depression is tested and diagnosed by a questionnaire (presumably well-designed, with r

eLife is sorta like this. The experiment isn’t live, but the publishing process is. https://elifesciences.org/about/peer-review It’s pretty interesting

This is a pipe dream of mine, but I would love a Wikipedia of null results: nullpedia! Nobody publishes null results bc they’re not exciting, but I think a lot of NSF money would be saved if “failed” experiments were aggregated somewhere in

I don't know if I agree with the author's argument that AI is bad only because people are bad. I'm aware that garbage in yields garbage out. But I also find myself squirming at the idea of accomplishing company goals by ident

Really really interesting work. I have so many questions. I wonder if the new letters change the molecular structure overall. Do these molecules bend and twist like vanilla DNA does? Will they wrap around histones? Can any of the new letter

>I wonder why, though? One reply to my comment suggested that women in CS kept increasing, just not as exponentially as for boys. IF that's true (I don't know the data AT ALL), then the precise question is what kept them from c

One thing to note about this downward trend of women in CS: its unique. If you look at the trends for women in law school, med school, physical sciences, and computer science, they all gradually increased to ~30% until the time highlighted

I mean, we do know that there are single gene disorders, caused by a single mutation with a known sequence. That said, you are right, most diseases involve many genes and the environment...

Grad student who studies DNA here: CRISPR is just a cool pair of scissors. What makes it cool is its flexibility. Different target? Pick a different guide RNA. But think about it. Many of the challenges of using that pair of scissors still

I hadn’t heard of her! This shifts my view. My comment was solely based off of the metastudies you see around spatial reasoning. Since I’m not very aware of the details (e.g. cultural effects), I stressed that it was a guess.

I mean, for genetics in the early 2000’s, I would say that mapping 99% of the genome is a good definition of complete. Its not as fun for Bill Clinton to say “the genome is mostly complete, barring a small bunch of gaps comprised of repeati

In Germany, the ratio is about 16:1 ( https://m.phys.org/news/2009-01-men-higher-women-chess-biolo... ). But even with these odds, the chance of picking 20 men in a row is quite small, about 20%. So that leaves us with t

I have a question: what is the most effective way for a social platform to prevent harassment? Every relevant social platform has a harassment problem. People are mean; relative anonymity & tribalism make it worse. This article offers n

I wish he had gone into more detail about the specific issues with anti-depressants. Most anti-depressants target serotonin or norepinephrine because the medical industry is still more or less following the "monoamine hypothesis".
