This has happened to us many times and we now do the same for remote interviews. No video? No interview. And even then, if you do great in the video we fly you in for an in person interview just to be sure. There's clearly a market for

No IC is going around making a million dollars for creating internal tools. If he's making a million it's for something else - he's a founder, he was acquihired, he is related to the founder, etc.

The problem with growth as an IC is that one person only has so many hours in a day. The only real way to multiply your impact is to transition from using your own hours to produce work towards directing the hours others use to produce work

This is likely because more front end developers are younger/less experienced. While more expensive/older developers prefer backend work and are compensated more highly because of their experience.
