On two occasions, my wife received PDF monstrosities via her school. The first time, I was astounded at the size of a PDF we had to download. When we opened it, it contained a movie. I was dumbstruck. The second time, I tried to open one wi

Ever notice that an Ethernet jack is just the right height for a USB plug to go into it snugly? I got confused by that one day when I plugged something in without paying attention.

Of course the result is what matters. But hypothetically, if you can throw together the basic CRUD of an app in 5 minutes with one toolset, and it takes 2 days in another, which one is more likely to let you hone in on the fine details? If

Two jobs ago I had to clock out, using a program installed on my computer, to go to the bathroom. The program sometimes crashed. I also had to fill out a paper timesheet, in case the computer one was wrong. My manager and I both had to sign

Thunderbolt is the coolest thing here to me. The way I read this, Intel at least partly owns the IP on it, so it should be available on PCs in the future, too? (I hope so, because that will create a bigger peripheral market.) UPDATE: Answer

Ads, I'm assuming. They do have those, you know - pretty well-targeted at programmers, too, and not farmed out to Google or whatever. Although if you're running Adblock, you might not know that.

"The line was long" is also a justification for shoplifting. "He looked at me funny" is also a justification for murder. All you're saying is "the offender can tell him/herself that they have a reason." Which is always true for anything any

One might assume that more profanity in a langage = more frustration with that language. But I'd bet that proportion of business use has something to do with it, too. If you're hacking on a personal project, you might feel freer to swear in

Well, wouldn't it? "Improper" means "will offend people." If nobody is offended by something, it's not improper. If lots of people are, it is. Whether you care is a different matter. If you don't, that makes you a rude person. Which you're

Besides all this, a CS degree, from what I hear (I don't have one) often teaches you a lot of concepts but not a lot of practical skills. Which isn't to say it isn't valuable, but it may not have prepared you fully for work. You may not kno

I disagree. The web exists because browsers and servers communicate based on open standards. The HN server doesn't know or care what OS or browser I'm using. I could be sitting here typing in my GET requests manually if I was fast enough. N

Sure. In one sense, anything is "modern" if it's developed this year, regardless of its feature set. So modern is probably the wrong word. But the argument that a version of IE which hasn't even come out yet doesn't have features that other

Business arguments aside, I really wish they would support IE9 on XP. If indeed IE9 has better web standards support than its predecessors, I, as a web developer, want IE users to switch. It's hard enough to convince users to upgrade their

If you use semantic versioning ( http://semver.org/ ), switching from 2.95 to 3.0 means you made backwards-incompatible changes. Major features could still happen in a point release.
