POP3 still has widespread use as a machine-to-machine bulk email transport. If you want to switch from an old mailbox to gmail, it'll ask you to configure a POP3 client which it will poll and download messages from.

So, you want to write a POP3 service?

(Nostalgia.) I had an MS-DOS app calls SCRPAINT which was a painting app for the 80x25 text mode. You could draw lines and it would do the right thing when lines bended at right angles or crossed by looking up the junction character code fo

Suppose I use Stripe in a similar way to HIBP and a customer comes along just as my server has gone down, would Stripe try again later? I think it should wait a little while but I'd hope it'd automatically try again later as long

I thought about that but I didn't want to be stuffing bytes back into the incoming stream and I didn't want to be reading the stream byte-by-byte either unless I really had to. I had a nice bit of code that read blocks of bytes an

It is very possible my information is out of date or I was using an older version of dot-net. Thank you!

Yep. While I did fix the bug as soon as I found it, I consider myself fortunate I chose POP3 to write my first server.

That's a flaw in dot-net's SslStream library. You don't get an opportunity to know what host the client is expecting before selecting the cert for this session. Reading discussions around this issue usually settle on reading

I'm writing (as a side project) a game with a client-server system. For the server, I'm using dot-net's SslStream (in TLS mode) and it needs to know which TLS cert to use prior to handing over control of the connection. For t

I'm writing a POP3 service ( http://billpg.com/POP3/ ) and I stumbled upon this as a bit of a forehead-slapping moment. Once I read about it, I tried attacking my own server by sending in "STLS\r\nCAPA\r\n"

Is it actually DNS, or is there a custom name-to-IP lookup process going on? Also, am I just needlessly splitting hairs?

One thing I wish git did differently was to have an atomic commit-and-push operation. I'd like to prepare my commit as normal, but when its ready, it pushes that commit as well, but if that push fails, it undoes the commit. Why? I rece

You could store the bytes of an EXE inside an image, just like how I could paste the base-64 of an EXE on the end of this message. The trick is going from that to actually running it. TVoKSGVsbG8gdGhlcmUuClRoYW5rIHlvdSBmb3IgcmVhZGluZyBteSBl
