One thing I've noticed with podcasts, is that my reader will download the full RSS every day, listing hundreds of episodes, just to see if there's a new one. I get why they do this as a new listener will want to start off with a f

Your "is this password valid" cache would need to be indexed by the clear-text password. That's a separate security issue.

The server will have a clear-text (leaving the base64 to one side) password in the HTTP request and a PBKDF2 (or similar) token loaded from the user database. Unless you store the user's password in the clear inside your user database,

Wouldn't you need to the substantial workload of PBKDF2 (et al) for each and every HTTP request? Maybe have the images, JS, CCS etc handled by a separate server, but there's still going to be many requests that need to be authenti

This would be a great option for find/xargs. -print0/-0 do the job for each other but then there's a disconnect with a user being able to view the list of files.

I wonder how this handles TLS. I have tried using dot-net's HttpListener object but was a little disappointed in how it handled TLS. (In the end, I used HttpListener in localhost-only mode and had an off-the-shelf proxy service to deal

One of the big mistakes with the design of IMAP was that there wasn't a standard Out-Box where a client could rely on the IMAP server for sending the email. I'd have loved to see a world where mail clients only had to implement IM

My favorite use of goto is with C#'s "yield return". The compiler converts a function with a yield command into a label. To resume a function from where it left off, the compiler adds code to test an added resumption-point va
